IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table depicts the numbers of people visits to Ashdown Museum pre- and post-refurbishment, while the charts show the result of surveys of visitor satisfaction during the year before and the year after it was refurbished.

Overall, survey data reveals an increase in total number of visitors as well as number of satisfied visitors after refurbishment.

A total of 74,000 people visited in the year before refurbishment, which increased to 92,000 people in the following year. Initially, a greater proportion of individuals i.e., 40% was not satisfied may be due to museum's infrastructure or services provided, but it was decreased to 15% following refurbishment. The number of people satisfied were also increased from 30% to 40%. In addition, people who were very satisfied were also significantly increased to 35%. However, the number of people who were very dissatisfied also decreased to 5% from 10%, while the percentage of visitors who did not respond to the survey were remained unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with data from the table and charts. However, the response could be improved by ensuring all data points are accurately described. For instance, you mention 'the number of people satisfied were also increased from 30% to 40%', but the chart shows 'satisfied' went from 30% to 40% and 'very satisfied' went from 15% to 35%. Clarifying these categories would make your report more precise. Overall, you covered the requirements well.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and a body paragraph. You use cohesive devices such as 'Initially', 'In addition', and 'However' to guide the reader through the information. The progression of ideas is clear, moving from the total visitor numbers to the specific satisfaction categories. To reach a higher band, ensure that referencing is always precise; for example, 'it was decreased' is slightly ambiguous as it refers to a percentage rather than the museum itself. Overall, the paragraphing is appropriate and the flow is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'refurbishment', 'proportion', and 'infrastructure'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'numbers of people visits' (should be 'numbers of visitors') and 'were remained unchanged' (should be 'remained unchanged'). While these errors do not impede communication, they prevent the use of vocabulary from being considered 'flexible' or 'precise'. To improve, focus on using more sophisticated reporting verbs and ensuring that nouns and verbs agree in number.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'the number of people satisfied were also increased' (subject-verb agreement error: 'number' is singular) and 'it was decreased to 15%' (passive voice is unnecessary here). Additionally, 'were remained unchanged' is grammatically incorrect. While these errors are noticeable, they do not cause difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, focus on consistent subject-verb agreement and avoiding unnecessary passive constructions when active voice is clearer.
