IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The blend of table and pie charts illustrate the number of visits made by people to the Ashdown Museum before and after its redevelopment, and the outcomes of surveys during the same years.
Overall, it can be clearly seen that the majority of individuals went to the museum after refurbishment, while the maximum people were satisfied with their visits and a few people showed no response.
By observing the graphs, it can be noticed that before making any changes to the museum, 74,000 people visited, which increased by 18,000 after variations to the Ashdown Museum. Moreover, only 15% reviewed the place as very satisfied in the initial year, which inclined to 35% after reconstruction. Approximately one-third of people were satisfied with their visits during the same two periods, but the rate of dissatisfaction decreased by 25% after variations to the museum. However, the proportion of people who rated the museum as very dissatisfied declined by 5% in the later years, but the ratio of no response remained same.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by summarizing the visitor numbers and survey results for both periods. You successfully identified the main trends, such as the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. However, the analysis is slightly hampered by some inaccuracies in data interpretation. For example, stating that the rate of dissatisfaction decreased by 25% is a miscalculation based on the provided data, and the description of the 'no response' category as remaining the same is not fully supported by the visual evidence. To reach a higher band, ensure that data points are reported with greater precision and that comparisons are more clearly linked to the specific figures provided in the charts.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The response is organized logically, moving from an introduction to an overview and then into specific details. Paragraphing is used, although the body paragraph is quite dense. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'In the initial year' to guide the reader. However, the flow is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions feel slightly forced. To improve, try to vary your linking words and ensure that each sentence builds clearly upon the previous one, creating a smoother progression of ideas throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'redevelopment', 'reconstruction', and 'proportion'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'variations to the museum' (which is not a standard collocation for refurbishment) and 'inclined to 35%' (where 'increased to' or 'rose to' would be more appropriate). The use of 'maximum people' is also unnatural. To improve, focus on using more precise collocations and academic vocabulary that fits the context of reporting data, rather than relying on general terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'The blend of table and pie charts illustrate' should be 'illustrates' (subject-verb agreement). Additionally, 'the ratio of no response remained same' is missing an article ('the same'). There are also some awkward phrasings, such as 'before making any changes to the museum', which could be more concisely expressed. Increasing the variety of complex structures while ensuring better control over basic grammar and articles will help improve your score in this criterion.
