Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 4.0
The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the ability to fully address the task. While the student identifies the total visitor numbers and some satisfaction percentages, the data is presented in a fragmented and confusing manner. The analysis lacks a clear overview of the main trends, and the attempt to interpret the data is hampered by inaccurate reporting of the figures. For example, the description of satisfaction levels is disjointed and difficult to follow. To improve, the student must ensure all data points are accurately transcribed and provide a coherent summary of the key changes between the two periods.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The essay lacks a logical structure. While there are paragraph breaks, the progression of ideas is unclear. The use of cohesive devices is very limited and often misused, such as the phrase 'on the other hand' which does not effectively link the two periods in a comparative way. The sentences are often disjointed, making it difficult for the reader to follow the comparison between the 'before' and 'after' periods. To improve, the student should use clear topic sentences for each paragraph and employ a wider range of linking words (e.g., 'in contrast', 'furthermore', 'consequently') to connect ideas more fluidly.
Lexical Resource — Band 4.5
The vocabulary is basic and repetitive, relying heavily on the words provided in the prompt. There are significant issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'not giving any internet' and 'dislike was 5% to 15%'. The student struggles to use precise terminology to describe statistical data, such as 'increased', 'decreased', or 'remained stable'. The limited range of vocabulary prevents the student from conveying the information with the necessary precision required for an Academic Task 1 response. Expanding the range of descriptive verbs and nouns related to data analysis is essential.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
The response contains frequent grammatical errors that impede communication. There are issues with sentence structure, such as missing subjects and verbs (e.g., 'during the year before refurbishment was dissatisfied 40%'), and incorrect tense usage. Punctuation is also inconsistent, with several run-on sentences and misused capital letters. The student relies almost exclusively on simple sentence structures, and attempts at more complex sentences are often grammatically incorrect. To improve, the student needs to focus on basic sentence construction, ensuring every sentence has a clear subject and verb, and work on consistent tense usage when describing past data.
