IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

The table illustrates the number of people who visited the Ashdown museum, the year before it was renovated and the year after it was renovated. Whereas, the pie chart shows the responses of the visitors satisfaction during these two periods.

Overall, a larger number of people visited after the museum was refurbished. Before the museum was upgraded, almost half of the people that visited expressed dissatisfaction which reduced significantly after refurbishment.

From the table provided, only 74,000 people visited the Ashdown museum before it was renovated, however, this number increased to 92,000 visitors after the upgrade.

Furthermore, before the area was refurbished, about 40 percent of this population were dissatisfied with their visit, this reduced significantly to 15 percent after renovations were made. While only 30 percent expressed satisfaction, this number increased to 40 percent after the museum was worked on. However, 15 percent of respondents were very satisfied with their visit, and this figure increased tremendously to 35 percent after the museum was upgraded. While 10 percent of individuals showed very dissatisfaction before renovation was done, this number reduced to 5 percent. Hence, there was no response from about 5 percent of respondents, before and after refurbishing.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from the general visitor numbers to the specific satisfaction survey results. You use cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'While', and 'However' to link ideas effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the table data from the chart data. The referencing is generally clear, though some transitions could be slightly more varied to improve the flow. Overall, the information is presented in a coherent and easy-to-follow manner.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information with precision. Phrases like 'expressed dissatisfaction', 'reduced significantly', and 'figure increased tremendously' are appropriate for a report. There is some repetition of basic verbs like 'visited' and 'increased'. To improve, try to incorporate more varied synonyms or collocations related to data reporting, such as 'witnessed a surge' or 'experienced a decline'. The word choice is generally accurate and does not impede communication, showing a good awareness of the required academic style.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the use of 'Whereas' and 'While' to create contrast. Most sentences are error-free, and your control of punctuation is generally good. There are a few minor slips, such as 'the responses of the visitors satisfaction' (should be 'visitors' satisfaction') and 'very dissatisfaction' (should be 'dissatisfaction'). These errors are infrequent and do not cause any difficulty for the reader. The grammatical control is solid, and you demonstrate the ability to handle complex information clearly.
