The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table and pie chart illustrate information about number of visitors and how much visitors are satisfied by the Ashdown Museum in the year before and after refurbishment. All the figures in the pie chart are in percent, and table contains exact figures.

Overall, the number of visitors increased after the refurbishment process, and there are major shifts in the survey results such as dissatisfaction has decreased after the process, while satisfied and very satisfied numbers have increased.

On the one hand, 74000 visitors were there before renovation, which have increased to 92000 visitors. Dissatisfaction numbers decreased from 40% to 15%, whereas positive results were there from 15% to 35% visitors very satisfied and from 30% to 40% visitors satisfied.

On the other hand, 10% of visitors were very dissatisfied before refurbishment , and this number shrink to 5% after the process. However, 5% people remained the same with no response for both years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main trends and provided a clear overview of the data. You covered both the table (visitor numbers) and the pie charts (satisfaction levels) and made relevant comparisons between the two periods. However, the report could be improved by including more precise data manipulation. For example, you mention that visitor numbers increased, but calculating the percentage increase would have added depth. Additionally, the description of the satisfaction categories is slightly repetitive. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are clearly linked to the specific year they represent to avoid any ambiguity for the reader.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. You used cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand' and 'On the other hand' to structure your points. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For instance, the transition between the visitor numbers and the satisfaction percentages could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, but ensure that each paragraph focuses on a distinct theme to improve the overall progression of your argument. Overall, the information is easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'refurbishment', 'renovation', and 'dissatisfaction'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you wrote 'how much visitors are satisfied', which should be 'how satisfied visitors were'. You also used 'shrink' (which is a verb) where a past participle or adjective might be more appropriate, such as 'shrank' or 'decreased'. Expanding your range to include more precise academic collocations would help elevate your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'table contains exact figures' is missing an article ('the table'). The phrase 'positive results were there from 15% to 35% visitors very satisfied' is awkward and grammatically incorrect. Additionally, there are tense inconsistencies, such as 'which have increased' instead of 'which increased'. Improving your control over articles, prepositions, and verb tenses will significantly improve the accuracy of your writing.
