The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table displays the total number of tourists who visited Ashdown museum before and after the year it was renovated, and the pie charts compare the results of the visitors satisfactory level before and after refurbishment.

Overall, it can be seen that the museum had more visitors after renovation. The tourists experienced more dissatisfaction before the museum was refurbished, while after it was renovated, people's level of satisfaction increased. However, the proportion of visitors with no response remained stable before and after the renovation.

The year before the refurbishment, the total number of tourists to Ashdown museum was 74,000. Majority of them were dissatisfied with the museum service accounting for 40%. This was followed by those who were satisfied at 30% and very satisfied at 15%. Meanwhile, visitors with no response accounted 5%, which was the least proportion regarding levels of satisfaction.

In contrast, more people visited the museum after the refurbishment which increased from 74,000 to 92,000. Tourists were more satisfied, which accounted for 40% and extremely satisfied at 35%. Despite this, 15% of them were unsatisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all requirements of the task. You have successfully identified the main features, such as the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. You have also made relevant comparisons between the two periods. However, the data reporting is slightly incomplete; for instance, you mention 'no response' remained stable, but you did not provide the specific figure for the second year to support this comparison. Additionally, the 'very satisfied' category for the second year is missing from your analysis. To reach a higher band, ensure all data points mentioned in the charts are accurately represented and compared.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices effectively, such as 'In contrast' and 'Despite this'. However, the use of linking words is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions between sentences could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of the data. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices further and ensure that each paragraph has a clear thematic focus.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'refurbishment', 'proportion', and 'accounted for'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'visitors satisfactory level' (should be 'visitors' satisfaction levels') and 'the least proportion' (should be 'the smallest proportion'). While you successfully convey the meaning, the range is somewhat limited. To achieve a higher score, incorporate more precise collocations and a wider variety of synonyms to describe trends and data points, avoiding repetitive phrasing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'accounted 5%' (missing 'for') and 'Majority of them' (missing 'The'). While these errors do not impede communication, they are noticeable. You have a good grasp of basic sentence construction, but the range of complex structures is somewhat limited. To improve, focus on ensuring articles and prepositions are used correctly and try to integrate more sophisticated complex sentence forms to demonstrate greater control over your writing.
