IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The pie chart illustrates the number of visitors that came to Ashdown Museum before and after its refurbishment. It also depicts the levels of satisfaction and dissatisfaction among the visitors in both scenarios.
Overall, the volume of people visiting before the refurbishment was significantly lower than the year the museum was refurbished. The number of people visiting before the refurbishments were made was 74,000 in a year. However, it improved noticeably to 92,000 after the refurbishments were done .
The year before refurbishment people were mostly dissatisfied with a satisfaction level of only 30% but that changed after the refurbishment and improved to 40% that is 10% more than before. A number of 10% visitors were very dissatisfied before the refurbishments which decreased to 5% following the refurbishments. The number of very satisfied visitors also increased more after the refurbishment from 15% to 35% after the refurbishments.
Though, majority number of people gave a response to the survey both times but 5% of people chose not to participate during both cases.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
You have successfully identified the main features of the data, including the increase in visitor numbers and the shifts in satisfaction levels. You provided specific data points to support your claims, which is essential for Task 1. However, the response could be improved by better integrating the data. For instance, you mention 'satisfaction level of only 30%' but do not clearly contrast this with the 'dissatisfied' category versus the 'very dissatisfied' category. Additionally, the final paragraph regarding the 5% who did not participate is a minor detail that does not add significant value compared to the main trends. To reach a higher band, ensure you group data more logically to highlight the most significant changes.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is logically organized into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. You use some cohesive devices such as 'However' and 'Though', which help the flow of information. However, the transition between sentences is sometimes a bit mechanical. For example, the phrase 'A number of 10% visitors' is slightly awkward, and the paragraphing could be more refined. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the connection between the satisfaction percentages and the overall visitor numbers could be more fluid. Overall, the progression of ideas is easy to follow, but the range of cohesive devices is somewhat limited.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey the information, using terms like 'refurbishment', 'volume', and 'participate'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, 'majority number of people' is not standard English; 'the majority of people' would be more accurate. Additionally, the repetition of 'refurbishments' throughout the text makes the writing feel slightly monotonous. To improve, try to use synonyms or rephrase sentences to avoid repeating the same nouns and verbs. The vocabulary is sufficient for the task, but lacks the precision and variety required for a higher band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors. For instance, 'The number of people visiting before the refurbishments were made' should be 'was made' to agree with 'number'. There are also issues with punctuation and phrasing, such as 'improved to 40% that is 10% more than before', which would be better as a separate clause or with a comma. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focus on subject-verb agreement and more careful proofreading of your sentence structures.
