IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table displays the total number of tourists to Ashdown museum before and after the year it was renovated, and the pie charts compare the results of the visitors' satisfactory level before and after refurbishment.

Overall, it can be seen that the museum had more visitors after the renovation. The tourists experienced more dissatisfaction before the museum was refurbished, while after it was renovated, people's level of satisfaction increased. However, the proportion of visitors with no response remained stable before and after the renovation.

The year before the refurbishment, the total number of tourists to Ashdown museum was 74,000. Majority of them were dissatisfied with the museum service accounting for 40%. This was followed by those who were satisfied at 30% and very satisfied at 15%. Meanwhile, visitors with no response accounted 5%, which was the least proportion regarding levels of satisfaction.

In contrast, more people visited the museum after the refurbishment which increased from 74,000 to 92,000. Tourists were more satisfied, which accounted for 40% and extremely satisfied at 35%. Despite this, 15% of them were unsatisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the data, including the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific data from the table and charts. However, there is a minor omission: you mentioned that the proportion of 'no response' remained stable, but you did not provide the specific figures for the second year to support this comparison. Additionally, ensure you include all categories; for instance, you omitted the 'satisfied' category in your description of the post-refurbishment data, which limits the completeness of your comparison.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'In contrast,' 'Meanwhile,' and 'Despite this' to connect ideas effectively. The progression of information is easy to follow. To improve, ensure that your paragraphing is balanced; the final paragraph is quite brief compared to the previous one. Additionally, some transitions could be more varied to enhance the flow, as the current structure is functional but slightly mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'refurbished,' 'proportion,' and 'renovated' correctly. However, there are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation. For example, you wrote 'accounted 5%' instead of 'accounted for 5%,' and 'satisfactory level' should be 'satisfaction level.' To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing when describing trends or data points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. Most of your sentences are clear and easy to understand. There are a few grammatical slips, such as 'Majority of them were dissatisfied' (should be 'The majority') and 'accounted 5%' (missing 'for'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more careful proofreading of articles and prepositions. Increasing the variety of complex structures would help demonstrate a wider grammatical range.
