IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the number of visitors in the year in which the refurbishment did not take place and after it had taken place in a museum. The circular charts represent the visitors’ reviews as well as the satisfaction they got in both periods.

Overall, the number of visitors had been increased dramatically after refurbishment. However, before refurbishment, most of the reviews were dissatisfied, but after it, the reviews got shifted towards satisfied. Also, there was no change in the neutral response after the repairing of the museum.

On one hand, the number of visitors before the refurbishment was 74,000 in figure, but the number had seen a surge after refurbishment; it was increased up to 18 thousand and in total 92,000.

Nevertheless, the results of the survey before manufacturing/refurbishing of the museum were as follows: 30% of the reviewers were dissatisfied, followed by 40% very dissatisfied. In addition, 15% of reviewers were very satisfied. After that, satisfied and no response together contributed 15% in the pie chart — 10% and 5% respectively.

On the other hand, after new construction, satisfied reviews were about one-third, around 40%. The number of dissatisfied reviewers had been reduced by 25%. Very satisfied reviews had increased and were around 35%. 5% of reviewers were satisfied, and at last, the response was given by 5% of the visitors.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the data, including the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. You provided specific data points to support your claims. However, there are some inaccuracies in your reporting. For example, you state that 'satisfied and no response together contributed 15%', but the chart shows 'satisfied' at 15% and 'no response' at 5%. Additionally, your description of the survey results after the refurbishment contains inconsistencies, such as claiming 'satisfied' was 40% while later mentioning 5%. These inaccuracies hinder the clarity of your report. To improve, ensure that your data extraction is precise and that you double-check your figures against the provided charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that separate the visitor numbers from the survey results. You use transition signals like 'Overall', 'On one hand', and 'Nevertheless' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are used slightly awkwardly, such as 'After that' when referring to the survey data. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow. To reach a higher band, focus on using a wider variety of cohesive devices and ensure that the links between sentences are more natural and less mechanical.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'refurbishment', 'surge', and 'neutral response'. However, there are some word choice errors and unnatural collocations. For instance, 'manufacturing/refurbishing' is inappropriate for a museum context, and 'in figure' is redundant. You also struggle with precision when describing the data, which impacts the effectiveness of your report. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensure that your word choices are contextually appropriate for describing statistical data and survey results.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is a positive step. However, there are several grammatical errors throughout the text, such as 'the number of visitors had been increased' (passive voice error), 'it was increased up to 18 thousand' (unnecessary 'it'), and 'the response was given by 5% of the visitors' (awkward phrasing). While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your main points, they occur frequently enough to impact the overall fluency. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice will help improve your accuracy.
