IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
The table illustrates the total number of visitors that visited the Ashdown Museum during both the year before and the year after the refurbishment, while the pie chart gives information about surveys regarding visitors satisfaction during those two timeline.
During the refurbishment year, a total of 74,000 visitors visited the Ashdown Museum. The year after, that number increased to 92,000.
Before the refurbishment work began, it is evident from the chart that 40% of the visitors were dissatisfied with their visit along with the 10% who were very dissatisfied. While 30% of the visitors showed satisfaction with another 15% being very satisfied. The later chart shows 40% of the visitors were satisfied with another 35% being very satisfied after the refurbishment. However, 15% were dissatisfied with 5% being very dissatisfied. 5% visitors didn't respond in both charts.
So, it is quite evident that, half the visitors that visited the museum before refurbishment were not satisfied with their visit but that changed after the refurbishment work was over and three-quarters of the visitors expressing their satisfaction after visiting in the following year.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the visitor numbers and the satisfaction survey results for both periods. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the increase in visitor numbers and the shift from dissatisfaction to satisfaction post-refurbishment. However, the analysis could be improved by making more direct comparisons between the two years rather than just listing the data. For example, noting that the proportion of 'very satisfied' visitors more than doubled (from 15% to 35%) would provide a more insightful summary. The overview is present but could be more clearly integrated to highlight the overall impact of the refurbishment.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for the table and charts, and a concluding summary. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'While', 'However', and 'The later chart shows', which help the flow of information. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the referencing could be smoother. For instance, the phrase 'The later chart' is a bit vague; referring to it as 'the post-refurbishment survey' would be more precise. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, including terms like 'refurbishment', 'dissatisfied', and 'proportion'. There are some minor issues with word choice, such as 'those two timeline' (should be 'periods') and '5% visitors' (should be '5% of visitors'). While the vocabulary is adequate for the task, it lacks the variety and precision required for a higher band. To improve, try to incorporate more varied reporting verbs and adjectives to describe the changes in the data, rather than relying on simple structures.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'the total number of visitors that visited' (redundant) and 'three-quarters of the visitors expressing their satisfaction' (should be 'expressed'). Additionally, 'along with the 10% who were very dissatisfied' is a sentence fragment. While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and ensuring all sentences have a clear main verb will help improve your accuracy.
