Student answer (Band 6.0)

The pie chart data illustrates the number of people visiting to Ashdown Museum from the year before and year after it was refurbished.

Overall, before the renovation the visitors were less when compared with the people after the renovation. Many of them had mixed feelings and majority of them being dissatisfied before the renovation but, after the renovation this changed and lot of visitors had changed their opinion and most of them were satisfied.

Before the refurbishment, there was a footfall of 74,000 and out of them 40% of them were dissatisfied and only 30% of them were satisfied and only 15% were very satisfied which showed they were lacking in some area.

After the refurbishment, the number of visitors significantly

increased. The percentage of satisfaction also increased such as 40% of people were satisfied, 35% were very satisfied. The number of dissatisfied people reduced drastically from 40% to 15%. No response has remained 5% in both the cases. This renovation led to a lot of visitors coming to Ashdown Museum.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response covers all parts of the task, including the visitor numbers and the satisfaction survey results. You have successfully identified the main trends, such as the increase in visitor numbers and the shift from dissatisfaction to satisfaction post-refurbishment. However, the report could be improved by including the specific visitor number for the year after the refurbishment (92,000) to allow for a more precise comparison. While the main features are highlighted, the analysis is slightly repetitive in the final paragraph. To reach a higher band, ensure that all data points are integrated into a cohesive narrative rather than listing them sequentially.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets. Cohesive devices such as 'Before the refurbishment' and 'After the refurbishment' help guide the reader through the timeline. However, some transitions are a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For instance, the transition between the general overview and the specific data points could be more sophisticated. Overall, the information is easy to follow, and the progression of ideas is clear throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have used a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey the information, including terms like 'refurbished', 'footfall', 'significantly increased', and 'drastically'. However, there are some instances of imprecise word choice, such as 'the visitors were less' (should be 'the number of visitors was lower') and 'in both the cases' (should be 'in both cases'). The vocabulary is adequate for the task, but to achieve a higher band, you should aim for more precise collocations and a slightly wider variety of descriptive language to avoid repetition of words like 'increased' and 'satisfied'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that persist. For example, 'the visitors were less when compared with the people' is awkward; 'the number of visitors significantly increased' is a good structure, but 'the number of dissatisfied people reduced' should be 'was reduced' or 'decreased'. Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout. While these errors do not impede communication, they demonstrate a need for more consistent control over complex grammatical forms to reach a higher band.
