IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

This graph demonstrates the numbers of visitors to a museum which is named as Ashdown Museum and presenting the summary of visitors before and after of its refurbishment.

Overall, the visitors and their satisfactory surveys are also mentioned in this graph which is a comparison of asking multiple questions to visitors regarding their visit before and after renovation of museum.

Initially, we have a graph which is presenting the percentages of responses of visitors before and after remodelling. So, we'll start with the number of visitors which is increased to 92,000 from 74000 which was before refurbishment. Afterwards, the most satisfactory responses which is conducted through multiple surveys also shows the greatest achievement as it was before. The numbers of satisfied visitors also boost from the earlier period. However, there is a rapid decrease in the figures of dissatisfactory visitors which is 40% previously whereas now only 15% are dissatisfied. Additionally, the most digruntled visitors also falls from 10% to 5%. The only thing which remains consistent is no response from visitors which is 5% as it was before. So, we can conclude there is rapid increase in the number and satisfactory responses after renovation.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. However, the analysis is somewhat superficial. For instance, the report mentions that satisfaction 'boosts' but fails to provide specific data points for the 'very satisfied' and 'satisfied' categories, which are key components of the survey charts. The description of the data is occasionally imprecise, such as referring to 'the most satisfactory responses' without clearly distinguishing between the categories provided in the survey. To reach a higher band, you should ensure all key data points are clearly identified and compared systematically rather than just describing the trends in general terms.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The response is organized into paragraphs, but the logical flow is somewhat mechanical. The use of cohesive devices is present, such as 'Additionally' and 'However', but they are sometimes used in a way that feels repetitive or slightly unnatural. The introduction is a bit wordy and redundant, repeating the task prompt rather than synthesizing the information. The progression of ideas within the body paragraph is clear, but the transition between the visitor numbers and the survey results could be smoother. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear, distinct focus would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands. There are some awkward word choices, such as 'digruntled' (misspelled) and 'remodelling' (which is less precise than 'refurbishment' in this context). The phrase 'the most satisfactory responses' is vague. While the vocabulary is sufficient to convey the meaning, it does not demonstrate a wide range of less common lexical items or precise collocations. Focusing on using more academic vocabulary related to data description, such as 'fluctuated', 'proportion', or 'significant increase', would improve your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'the numbers of visitors... which is increased' (subject-verb agreement) and 'before and after of its refurbishment' (unnecessary preposition). There are also issues with article usage and tense consistency. While these errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points, they are frequent enough to limit the score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of prepositions when describing data trends.
