IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The following charts illustrates the times before and after the refurbishment of Ashdown Museum. We are going to discuss the reviews and change in number of the visitors in each timeline.

During the year before refurbishment the number of the visitors was around 74,000 per year. In this time only 15% of the visitors were completely satisfied with their visit, while a bunch of them gave moderate response, then a big majority of people weren't happy with their visit to the the museum and around 10-15% were very dissatisfied or gave no response of the survey.

After a year of refurbishment the survey was conducted again and the response was quite amazing by the visitors. The number of the visitors increased upto 92,000 people per year, around 35% of the visitors were pretty satisfied by the work, and 40% of them came up with an answer of just satisfied. The number of the people who were dissatisfied with their visit also decreased to 15%

The survey told that the management did a great work in satisfying their visitors with their work

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the data, including the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. However, the response lacks a clear overview or summary statement that synthesizes the trends. While you mention the figures, the analysis is somewhat descriptive rather than comparative. To reach a higher band, ensure you explicitly contrast the 'before' and 'after' data points more effectively. The final sentence is more of a subjective conclusion than a summary of the data provided. Ensure all key features are highlighted in a more analytical manner.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the progression of ideas. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat limited and occasionally mechanical. For instance, the transition between the description of the 'before' and 'after' periods could be smoother. Some sentences are linked in a repetitive way. To improve, try using a wider variety of linking words and phrases (e.g., 'In contrast,' 'Conversely,' 'Furthermore') to connect your ideas more fluidly. Paragraphing is present, but the internal structure of the paragraphs could be more cohesive.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the precision and range required for higher bands. Phrases like 'a bunch of them' and 'pretty satisfied' are too informal for an Academic Task 1 report. Additionally, 'came up with an answer of' is wordy and unnatural. You should aim for more academic collocations and precise terminology, such as 'a significant proportion,' 'the majority,' or 'reported high levels of satisfaction.' Expanding your range of descriptive adjectives and adverbs will help you convey the data more professionally.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are several grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. For example, 'The following charts illustrates' contains a subject-verb agreement error, and 'the the museum' is a repetition error. There are also issues with article usage and prepositional phrasing (e.g., 'increased upto'). While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit your score. Focus on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and ensuring consistent use of articles and prepositions.
