IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table shows the total mathematically calculations of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the period of refurbished along with the satisfaction of visitor that results in two separate survey charts .

Overall, the experience of the visitors followed the opposite pattern in duration of refurbishment. Out of 74000 visitors, the largest proportion of population around 40% was dissatisfied with their visit before the refurbished that decreases to 15% after the refurbishment.

Consequently, the satisfaction rate increases to about 10% from the total 92000 visitors after the advancement in the museum. It is also noticeable that the main part of visitors that are highly satisfied shows the incremental behavior of 10% in one year. As a result the number of people that are not very satisfied decreases by the time .

Fewer or 5% individuals did not show any response from the process of refurbishment in the museum.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which negatively impacts the score. While you have identified the main trends, the analysis is somewhat superficial. You mention the visitor numbers (74,000 and 92,000) and the shift in satisfaction levels, but the data is not fully exploited. For instance, you could have provided more specific comparisons between the 'very satisfied' and 'satisfied' categories to better illustrate the shift. The summary is present, but the lack of length and the omission of some key data points prevent a higher score. Ensure you cover all parts of the prompt and provide a more thorough overview of the data provided in the table and charts.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into a brief introduction and body paragraphs, but the progression of ideas is somewhat disjointed. While you use cohesive devices like 'Consequently' and 'As a result', some transitions feel mechanical or slightly misused, such as 'Fewer or 5% individuals did not show any response'. The paragraphing is insufficient; the response would benefit from a clearer structure separating the visitor numbers from the satisfaction survey results. Referencing is occasionally unclear, making it difficult for the reader to follow the logic between the table data and the chart data.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task but lacks precision and variety. Phrases like 'total mathematically calculations' are unnatural and imprecise. You rely on basic descriptors such as 'main part' and 'incremental behavior', which do not accurately reflect the data trends. There are also issues with word choice, such as 'refurbished' used as a noun instead of 'refurbishment'. To improve, focus on using more academic collocations and precise terminology related to data description, such as 'a significant increase' or 'a marked decline'.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede clarity. For example, 'before the refurbished that decreases to 15%' contains incorrect verb tense and word form. You also struggle with subject-verb agreement and article usage, such as 'the main part of visitors that are highly satisfied'. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors limits the score. Focus on proofreading for basic tense consistency and ensuring that relative clauses are constructed correctly.
