Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum before and after its renovation, whereas the pie charts depict the results of surveys asking visitors about their satisfaction with their visits during the same two periods.

Overall, the number of visitors were less during the year before refurbishment than the number of visitors in the year after refurbishment. However, the results of surveys show that satisfaction was increased with the upgrading, and the very dissatisfied section was also rose in the year after renovation.

There were 74,000 visitors during the year before upgrading, whereas the number of visitors rose significantly to 92,000 in the year after renovation. The results show the visitors that were very satisfied with the Museum before changing featured the proportion of 15%, while the figure went up to 35% in the year after changings. Meanwhile, the proportion remained 30% and 40% in the years before and after modernization, respectively.

For dissatisfied section, the figure stood at 40% before renovation, but it faced a decline at 15% in the year after renovation. There were 10% and 5% very dissatisfied visitors in the years before and after refurbishment, respectively. The visitors who gave no response were equal at 5% during the same two periods.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

You have successfully identified the main features of the data, including the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. You provided a clear overview and supported your points with specific figures from the table and charts. However, there is a factual error in your summary: you stated that the 'very dissatisfied' section rose after the renovation, but the data shows it actually decreased from 10% to 5%. Additionally, your description of the 'dissatisfied' category is slightly confusing. To reach a higher band, ensure that your data interpretation is perfectly accurate and that you clearly distinguish between the different categories of satisfaction.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. You use cohesive devices such as 'whereas', 'meanwhile', and 'in the year after' to link ideas. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be improved by grouping the satisfaction data more effectively. For instance, the third paragraph mixes visitor numbers with satisfaction percentages, which disrupts the flow. Using more sophisticated referencing and ensuring each paragraph has a clear thematic focus would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'renovation', 'modernization', 'proportion', and 'refurbishment'. However, there are some awkward collocations and word choices, such as 'very dissatisfied section was also rose' (should be 'the percentage of very dissatisfied visitors also rose') and 'after changings' (should be 'after the changes' or 'post-renovation'). To improve, focus on using more precise nouns and avoiding repetitive phrasing. Expanding your range of synonyms for 'increase' and 'decrease' would also help you achieve a higher score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is appropriate for this task. However, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. For example, 'the number of visitors were less' (should be 'was lower'), 'satisfaction was increased' (should be 'satisfaction increased'), and 'it faced a decline at 15%' (should be 'a decline to 15%'). These errors are frequent enough to be noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the main points. Increasing your control over subject-verb agreement and prepositional usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
