The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The table compares the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum in the year before and after its refurbishment, while the pie charts illustrate visitors’ levels of satisfaction during the same periods.
Overall, the number of visitors increased considerably after the museum was refurbished. In addition, visitor satisfaction improved significantly, with a much larger proportion of people reporting that they were either satisfied or very satisfied.
Before the refurbishment, the museum had 74,000 visitors. This number rose to 92,000 in the following year, an increase of 18,000 visitors. The survey results also show a positive change in visitors’ opinions.
Before the renovation, 15% of visitors were very satisfied and 30% were satisfied. After the refurbishment, these figures increased to 35% and 40%, respectively. Therefore, the total proportion of satisfied visitors rose from 45% to 75%.
In contrast, dissatisfaction fell after the renovation. The percentage of very dissatisfied visitors decreased from 10% to 5%, while dissatisfied visitors dropped from 15% to 10%. Neutral responses also declined from 30% to 15%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and supported these with accurate data from both the table and the pie charts. The comparison between the two periods is well-integrated, and the key features—such as the rise in visitor numbers and the shift toward higher satisfaction levels—are clearly highlighted. The data is presented accurately, and the selection of information is balanced, ensuring the reader gets a comprehensive summary of the provided visual information without unnecessary detail.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs that group information thematically. The progression of ideas is smooth, moving from visitor numbers to satisfaction levels. Cohesive devices such as 'In addition', 'Therefore', and 'In contrast' are used effectively to link sentences and paragraphs. The paragraphing is appropriate, and the information flows naturally, making the report easy to follow. There is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words, and the structure supports the overall clarity of the summary.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a good range of vocabulary appropriate for an academic report. Phrases like 'considerably', 'proportion of people', and 'positive change' are used accurately. The vocabulary is precise and fits the context of describing statistical data well. While the range is sufficient to convey meaning with flexibility, it could be further enhanced by incorporating slightly more sophisticated or varied synonyms for 'increased' or 'decreased' to avoid repetition. However, the current usage is natural and error-free, which is sufficient for a high band score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a high level of grammatical accuracy. You have successfully used a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as the opening complex sentence and the use of participial phrases. Punctuation is used correctly throughout, and there are no significant grammatical errors that impede communication. The control over tense usage—switching between past and present as appropriate for the data—is consistent. The majority of sentences are error-free, and the overall quality of the writing is polished and professional.
