Student answer (Band 5.5)

The chart depicts the number of people who visit Ashdown Museum before and after it was refurbished. The two pie charts illustrate how satisfied were the visitors during these periods.

Overall, Museum became more popular after refurbishment. The number of the visitors and satisfaction of the people increased after the refurbishment. Dissatisfaction rate reduced, while the number of visitors who have not recorded the feedback remain same.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers the main features of the data, including the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. However, the report is somewhat inconsistent in its data presentation. For instance, the prompt mentions a table for visitor numbers and pie charts for satisfaction, but the student refers to everything as 'charts'. Furthermore, the data reporting is slightly inaccurate; the student states that the number of visitors who did not record feedback remained the same, but the data shows a change from 5% to 5% (which is consistent) while the visitor numbers themselves actually increased significantly. The overview is clear, but the analysis of the specific figures could be more precise to fully meet the requirements of a higher band.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs. The use of cohesive devices such as 'On one hand', 'However', and 'On the other hand' helps to guide the reader through the information. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the paragraphing could be more refined. The referencing is generally clear, though the connection between the visitor numbers and the satisfaction percentages could be more fluidly integrated to improve the overall flow of the report.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to describe trends and comparisons effectively. Phrases like 'dissatisfaction rate reduced' and 'increased largely' are functional. However, there is a lack of variety and precision in the lexical choices. The student repeats 'number of the people' and 'refurbishment' frequently. To achieve a higher score, the student should incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations, such as 'a significant rise in visitor numbers' or 'a marked improvement in satisfaction levels', rather than relying on basic descriptive language.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors, such as 'Museum became more popular' (missing an article), '45% visitor recoded satisfaction' (incorrect verb form/article usage), and 'rest of the 30% were satisfied' (awkward phrasing). Additionally, there are minor punctuation and article errors throughout the text. While these errors do not impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent the response from reaching a higher band score.
