IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The provided table illustrates the whole amount of individuals who visited the Ashdown Museum in two years. The first year was before refurbishement additionaly to the second year wich was after. The pie chart demonstrate the concequenses of a survey wich was conducted in the same two years asking about visitors perspective over their visit across a range of five levels(very satisfaid, satisfied, dissatisfied, very dissatisfied, no response). The figures suggest a link between the total vistors number plus the results of the survey.

Overall, it can be clearly seen that the number of citizens who went to the musem rocketed later refurbishement. Moreover individuals opinions were sharply divided. To illustrate this concept it seems to be that the number of both people who were very satisfied and satisfied boomed. Individuals who did not like to share their point of view reached a plateau. Last but not least the number of citizens that they were very and dissatisfied surged in a shocking approach.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to adequately address the task requirements. While you mention the table and pie charts, you do not provide any specific data points (numbers or percentages) to support your summary. A Task 1 response must report key features and make comparisons using the provided data. By simply stating that numbers 'rocketed' or 'surged' without citing the actual figures, you have not provided a clear overview of the information. To improve, you must select specific data points—such as the total visitor numbers before and after refurbishment—to illustrate your points. The current summary is too vague and lacks the necessary analytical detail required for an Academic Task 1 response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organised into two paragraphs, which is a logical structure. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'To illustrate this concept', and 'Last but not least'. However, the progression of ideas is somewhat mechanical. The transition between the introduction and the overview is abrupt, and the connection between the data sets is not clearly established. While the paragraphing is sufficient, the internal flow of sentences could be improved by using more varied linking words and ensuring that each sentence clearly relates to the previous one to create a smoother narrative.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is somewhat limited and contains several spelling errors, such as 'refurbishement', 'wich', 'concequenses', 'vistors', and 'musem'. These errors are frequent and occasionally distracting. While you attempt to use some descriptive language like 'rocketed' and 'boomed', the overall range is narrow. To achieve a higher band score, you should focus on accurate spelling and expanding your range of vocabulary to describe trends more precisely. For example, instead of 'boomed', you could use 'experienced a significant increase' or 'rose substantially'. Precision in word choice is essential for describing statistical data effectively.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that impede clarity. Examples include 'the whole amount of individuals', 'the pie chart demonstrate', and 'the number of citizens that they were very and dissatisfied'. These errors involve subject-verb agreement, incorrect preposition usage, and awkward phrasing. While the meaning is generally understandable, the frequency of these errors suggests a lack of control over complex structures. You should focus on proofreading for basic grammatical accuracy, particularly regarding pluralisation and verb tense consistency, to ensure your writing is more polished and professional.
