Student answer (Band 7.5)
The table shows the number of people who visited Ashdown Museum before and after its refurbishment, while the pie charts show how satisfied visitors were during these two periods.
Overall, the number of visitors increased after the refurbishment. Also, visitor satisfaction improved, as the percentages of people who were very satisfied or satisfied increased, while dissatisfaction fell.
Before the refurbishment, the museum had 74,000 visitors. This number increased to 92,000 in the following year. In terms of satisfaction, 15% of visitors were very satisfied before the refurbishment, while 30% were satisfied. However, 40% were dissatisfied and 10% were very dissatisfied. The remaining 5% gave no response.
After the refurbishment, the percentage of very satisfied visitors rose considerably from 15% to 35%. The proportion of satisfied visitors also increased, from 30% to 40%. In contrast, the percentage of dissatisfied visitors fell from 40% to 15%, while very dissatisfied visitors decreased from 10% to 5%. The percentage of people who gave no response remained unchanged at 5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response effectively addresses all parts of the task. You have provided a clear overview of the main trends and supported these with accurate data from both the table and the pie charts. You successfully compared the visitor numbers and satisfaction levels between the two periods. The information is well-selected, and the key features—such as the increase in visitor numbers and the shift from dissatisfaction to satisfaction—are highlighted clearly. The response is balanced and covers all necessary data points without omitting significant information, meeting the requirements for a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The response is logically organized, with a clear introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs that group information by category (visitor numbers and satisfaction). The progression of ideas is smooth and easy to follow. You use cohesive devices such as 'In terms of', 'However', 'In contrast', and 'while' effectively to link sentences and ideas. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different data sets, which aids readability. The flow of information is natural, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey information precisely. Phrases like 'rose considerably', 'proportion of satisfied visitors', and 'remained unchanged' are used accurately and appropriately for an academic report. While the vocabulary is functional and accurate, it could be further enhanced by incorporating a slightly wider range of less common lexical items to describe trends, such as 'surged', 'plummeted', or 'marginal'. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice or collocation that impede communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5
The response displays a good variety of complex structures, including the use of subordinate clauses ('while the pie charts show...', 'as the percentages of people who were...'). The grammar is highly accurate, with almost no errors throughout the text. Punctuation is used correctly to support the structure of your sentences. The majority of your sentences are error-free, and the control over tense and subject-verb agreement is consistent. The writing is clear and professional, reflecting a high level of grammatical competence.
