IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The pie chart compare the results of visitors satisfaction before and year after the museum's refurbishment.

Overall, high number of visitors are dissatisfied a year before the upgradation just in one year this number is improved dramatically, while some people think there is still room of improvement.

The data shows 74,000 people visited the Ashdown museum before the refurbishment and approximately 45 percent of them were satisfied with the museum , while a vey large number of people were dissatisfied and some of them didn't respond to the survey.

This number is improved dramatically only in one year right after the upgradation of the museum and data also shows that the foot fall has been increased after the refurbishment in which almost 75 percent of the people are satisfied with the museum's new look while 20 percent of the people still not satisfied with the refurbishment. There is a very low number of people haven't respond to the survey.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

You have successfully identified the main features of the data, including the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. However, the response lacks precision in reporting the data. For instance, you mention '45 percent' for satisfaction before the refurbishment, but the chart shows 40 percent. Additionally, you state '74,000' visitors, but the chart indicates 74,000 for the year before and 92,000 for the year after. The summary is somewhat general, and more careful attention to the specific figures provided in the charts would improve the accuracy of your reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow the information. You use some cohesive devices like 'Overall' and 'while', but the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical. The transition between the description of visitor numbers and the satisfaction survey results could be smoother. Additionally, the referencing is occasionally unclear, such as in the phrase 'This number is improved dramatically', where it is not immediately obvious if you are referring to the satisfaction percentage or the visitor count. Improving the variety of linking words would enhance the overall coherence.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

You have an adequate range of vocabulary to convey the main points, such as 'refurbishment', 'dissatisfied', and 'survey'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'upgradation' (which is not standard English; 'refurbishment' or 'renovation' is better) and 'foot fall has been increased' (should be 'footfall has increased'). You also use 'haven't respond' instead of 'had not responded'. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise academic vocabulary and ensure correct word forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text, such as 'The pie chart compare' (subject-verb agreement), 'high number of visitors are dissatisfied' (missing article 'a'), and 'some of them didn't respond' (informal contraction). Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly with spacing around commas. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the clarity of your writing. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will help improve your accuracy.
