IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The table demonstrates the number of Ashdown Museum visitors during the year before and the year after the refurbishment, while the two pie charts compare the feedbacks from the visitors during the same timeframe.

In is clearly noticeable that the number of visitors increased after the refurbishment of the museum. The charts show that majority of the visitors were dissatisfied with the museum, while after it was renovated, they were satisfied with it.

Only 74,000 people visited the museum before the renovation, while this number witnessed a dramatic rise to 92,000 after renovation. The feedbacks from the visitors tell us that about 40% of the visitors were dissatisfied which was the highest amount at that time.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response fails to meet the minimum word count requirement of 150 words, which significantly impacts the task achievement score. While you have identified the main trends—the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels—the analysis is incomplete. You have not provided a comprehensive overview of the data, such as the specific categories of satisfaction (e.g., 'very satisfied' or 'satisfied') shown in the pie charts. To improve, ensure you cover all parts of the prompt, including detailed comparisons of all data points provided in the visual aids, and expand your analysis to meet the length requirements.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.5

The essay is organized into three short paragraphs, which is a logical structure for a report. However, the progression of ideas is limited due to the brevity of the text. You use some basic cohesive devices like 'while' and 'after', but the flow between sentences is somewhat mechanical. To achieve a higher band, you should use a wider range of linking words and ensure that each paragraph develops a clear, cohesive point that connects back to the overall summary of the data.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, but it lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. Phrases like 'highest amount' and 'feedbacks' (which is an uncountable noun) are slightly inaccurate. You rely on simple descriptors such as 'increased' and 'dissatisfied'. To improve, incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to data description, such as 'significant growth', 'proportion', or 'level of satisfaction', and ensure you use nouns correctly in their plural or singular forms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are some grammatical errors, such as 'In is clearly noticeable' (likely a typo for 'It') and the misuse of 'feedbacks'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to affect the overall clarity. To improve, focus on proofreading for minor slips and try to incorporate a wider variety of complex sentence structures, such as using relative clauses or passive voice, to describe the data more effectively.
