IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The given Pie chart illustrates the activity of visitors before and after the refurbishment of the Ashdown Museum and also a survey of people who travelled to museum asking their satisfaction level for the place during both periods.

It is clearly observed that there is a tremendous spike in visitors after the renovation of museum with the increase of 18000 more people compared with the earlier numbers of 74000 people. Results of surveys are also very positive. Major changes can be seen into levels of very satisfactory and dissatisfaction. Prior to refurbishment there are only 15% visitors who were pleased by their visit, which changed to 35% after the repair and modification to the museum. Rate of dissatisfaction dropped from 40% to 15% and degree of satisfaction also increased 10% more after the year of refurbishment. 5% visitors opt giving no response in both periods and number of very disappointed people also declined to 5% from 10%.

In conclusion, it is clear that overall experience of the visitors is enhanced after the refurbishment of Ashdown Museum.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response covers the main features of the data well, identifying the increase in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels. You successfully compared the two periods, which is essential for Task 1. However, the report could be improved by including more specific data points from the charts to support your observations. For instance, while you mention the increase in visitor numbers, you could have explicitly stated the exact figures for the satisfaction categories (e.g., 'Satisfied' increased from 40% to 50%) to provide a more comprehensive summary. The overview is present but could be more distinct to better highlight the overall trends.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, a body paragraph detailing the data, and a brief conclusion. The progression of ideas is easy to follow. You use some cohesive devices, such as 'Prior to refurbishment' and 'In conclusion', to link your points. However, the transition between the visitor numbers and the survey results is a bit abrupt. Using more varied linking words or phrases to connect these two distinct sets of data would improve the flow and help the reader navigate the information more smoothly.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'refurbishment', 'modification', and 'dissatisfaction' appropriately. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'opt giving' instead of 'opted to give' or 'travelled to museum' (missing an article). To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more precise collocations and avoid repetitive phrasing. For example, instead of saying 'there are only 15% visitors', you could use 'only 15% of visitors reported being pleased'. Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical slips, such as 'the renovation of museum' (missing an article), 'there are only 15% visitors who were pleased' (tense inconsistency), and 'increased 10% more' (awkward phrasing). These errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the score. To improve, focus on article usage and ensuring consistent verb tenses when describing past data. Increasing the variety of complex structures would also help demonstrate better control over grammar.
