IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the amount of visit people make to Ashdown Museum before and after the renovation of the place. While the pie charts express the outcome of feedback from the visitors during the aforementioned period. Overall, it can be seen that even though more people went to the Museum after it was renovated, there were no much difference from the analysis of the survey that was done before and after.

The number of individuals who went to the Ashdown Museum the year before it was developed were 74,000 which was relatively few compared to 92,000 people who patronized the place after the in the period after it was developed.

However, despite the increase in the amount of visits made by individuals in the year following the renovation of the Museum, the analysis of the Survey that was done before and after revealed that customers satisfaction was relatively the same in both years.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The student attempts to address the task by summarizing both the table showing visitor numbers and mentioning the pie charts regarding survey feedback. The main features are identified, such as the rise in visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000 and the general observation that customer satisfaction remained relatively stable. However, the response falls short of providing a fully developed overview, as specific details from the pie charts (such as percentages of satisfaction levels) are completely omitted. Furthermore, the phrasing 'amount of visit people make' demonstrates some awkwardness in reporting data. Because the response covers the basic elements of both the table and charts but lacks a thorough reporting of data points from the visual aids, it aligns well with Band 6.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response is arranged into logical paragraphs, starting with an introductory overview followed by body paragraphs detailing visitor numbers and survey results respectively. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'While the pie charts express...', 'Overall, it can be seen that...', and 'However, despite the increase...'. However, referencing and cohesion are occasionally faulty; for instance, the second sentence is a fragment beginning with 'While' that lacks a main clause connected to the first sentence. Paragraphing is present and helps structure the response, but mechanical referencing keeps the organizational flow at a moderate level, fitting the Band 6 descriptor.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate vocabulary range to communicate the basic trends of the visual data, employing terms like 'renovation', 'patronized', 'satisfaction', and 'analysis'. However, there are notable lexical errors and awkward collocations throughout the text. For example, 'amount of visit people make' should be 'number of visits people make', and 'there were no much difference' contains a grammatical and lexical mismatch. Additionally, the phrase 'survey that was done before and after' is repetitive and lacks precision. These inaccuracies do not entirely impede communication, but they restrict the lexical score to Band 5.5.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating some attempt at subordination and coordination (e.g., 'While the pie charts express the outcome...', 'Overall, it can be seen that even though more people went...'). However, there are frequent grammatical errors and awkward structures. The first sentence contains a fragment ('While the pie charts express the outcome of feedback...'). Other errors include subject-verb agreement and phrasing issues, such as 'there were no much difference', 'were 74,000 which was relatively few compared to', and 'after the in the period'. Because simple sentences are often error-free while complex structures contain persistent mistakes that occasionally strain comprehension, the grammar aligns with Band 5.5.
