IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

The table above shows the dramatic difference between the change in number of visitors and the proportion of the results of survey before and after refurbishment of Ashdown Museum. As we can observe, the total number of visitors before refurbishment was 74000 which increased significantly to 92000 after refurbishment. The table also compares the level of satisfaction between the visitors visiting at the year before and after the refurbishment of museum. Here, the pie chart compares satisfaction level which is higher after the refurbishment. The visitors shows only the satisfaction level triple then the year before refurbishment. Here, the chart also shows that the visitors that has shown no response is only constant throughout the change. The chart on the left shows the year before the refurbishment where the level of dissatisfied visitors were 40 and were decreased to 15 later. The chart on the right hand side shows that th level of satisfaction is drastically different and has increased from 10 to 40. Visitors number too rose from 74000 to 92000.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response covers the main features of both the table and the charts. You successfully report the overall visitor numbers, which rose from 74,000 to 92,000, and highlight key trends regarding visitor satisfaction before and after the refurbishment. However, there are some inaccuracies and vague descriptions in your interpretation of the visual data. For instance, you mention that 'the level of dissatisfied visitors were 40 and were decreased to 15 later', but the charts actually indicate percentages or proportions rather than raw numbers, and your reading of the specific chart categories is somewhat confused in places. To achieve a higher band score, you need to present an overview with greater precision, ensuring that the data from both the table and the survey results are clearly distinguished and accurately reported without confusing numbers and percentages.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response presents information with some overall coherence, but it suffers significantly from a lack of paragraphing. The entire text is written as a single block, which makes the progression of ideas difficult to follow. While you attempt to use cohesive devices such as 'As we can observe', 'The table also compares', and 'Here', these transitions are often repetitive and mechanically deployed rather than smoothly integrated. Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, particularly when you use pronouns like 'Here, the chart also shows that the visitors that has shown no response...' without a well-established anchor. To improve, you should divide your response into clear paragraphs—such as an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs detailing the specific data—and use a wider variety of cohesive markers naturally.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'refurbishment', 'proportion', and 'significantly'. However, there are notable limitations and inaccuracies in your word choice and collocation. For example, phrases like 'the change in number of visitors and the proportion of the results of survey' are awkward, and you write 'th level of satisfaction' with a typo. Furthermore, you repeat basic verbs and structures frequently, such as 'The chart also shows that the visitors...' multiple times. While communication is not severely impeded, these lexical errors and the restricted control over precise vocabulary keep your score at the mid-range level.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

Your writing displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The table above shows the dramatic difference between...' and 'The chart on the left shows the year before the refurbishment where the level of dissatisfied visitors were 40...'. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are several noticeable errors, including subject-verb agreement issues ('the level of dissatisfied visitors were 40', 'The visitors shows'), missing articles ('at the year before'), and awkward phrasing ('visitors that has shown no response'). Punctuation is also basic, with run-on tendencies. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, the frequency of grammatical slips prevents the response from reaching a higher band.
