Student answer (Band 5.0)

The tabular representation illustrates information regarding number of visitors who visited Ashdown museum before and after refurbishment. The table compares the satisfaction level of visitors and how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Overall, It is observed after surveys that more than half number of visitors were satisfied due to which number of tourists after refurbishment increased significantly.

On an average 74,000 tourists visited Ashdown museum before renovation but figure climbed after refurbishment and it recorded a rise of 18,000. Moreover, after surveys it is witnessed that 40% of people were dissatisfied and 10% were very dissatisfied. However, number was low regarding there satisfaction level, only 15% were very satisfied and 30% of them were just satisfied. Unfortunately, 5% of them do not pass any comments.

After refurbishment, quite impressive 75% of tourist were satisfied and again 5% people do not give any reviews about museum after refurbishment. Just 15% were dissatisfied and remaining percentage was very dissatisfied.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.5

The response covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of visitor numbers and survey results before and after refurbishment, meeting the 150-word requirement. However, the student misinterprets the data sources in the introductory paragraph by stating that the table compares the satisfaction level, whereas the table displays visitor numbers while the charts show satisfaction levels. The overview attempts to link satisfaction to the increase in visitors, but the details in body paragraphs contain minor inaccuracies in data reporting (e.g., stating that 40% were dissatisfied and 10% very dissatisfied before renovation, but mischaracterising the combined percentages after refurbishment as 75% satisfied, 15% dissatisfied, and 5% very dissatisfied/no response). Despite these minor misinterpretations, key comparisons are made.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The response is structured into four paragraphs, including an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing the before and after periods respectively. Logical progression is attempted, but some cohesive devices are mechanical or awkwardly used, such as 'Moreover', 'However', and 'Unfortunately'. Referencing is sometimes unclear, for instance using 'number was low regarding there satisfaction level' without precise context. Paragraphing is present and follows a topical layout, but the overall progression lacks seamless transitions between the table data and survey chart data.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The student attempts some less common vocabulary items such as 'refurbishment', 'renovation', and 'significantly'. However, there are notable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'do not pass any comments' instead of 'did not leave any feedback' or 'made no response', and spelling/grammatical confusions like 'there satisfaction level' instead of 'their satisfaction level'. The vocabulary range is adequate for basic reporting, but recurring inaccuracies limit the score to a 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, such as 'The tabular representation illustrates information regarding number of visitors who visited...' and 'On an average 74,000 tourists visited Ashdown museum before renovation but figure climbed after refurbishment...'. There are several grammatical errors, including missing articles ('number of visitors', 'figure climbed'), tense inconsistency ('do not pass', 'do not give' mixed with past tense 'visited', 'recorded'), and punctuation errors. These errors occasionally cause minor difficulty for the reader but do not entirely impede communication.
