IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table and the pie charts show the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum in year before and after of its refurbishment and the result of survey conducted about their experience at the museum, respectively.

Overall, the refurbishment was quite a success. In a result of that the number of visitors has increased and survey showed that overall satisfaction level was risen after the refurbishment.

It is evident that the number of visitors to the museum significantly increased from 74000 to 92000 after the renovations. After the renovations, the percentage of people in "Very satisfied" section has more than doubled it's portion from 15% to 35% whereas "Dissatisfied" section doomed from 40% to just 15%, showing that people are enjoying the newly renovated museum from before.

It can be seen that satisfaction category combined took over nearly three quarters in comparison of dissatisfaction category which was half before the refurbishment. This showed a major jump in satisfaction putting just 20% overall dissatisfaction. In both cases 5% of the people did not give any response to the survey.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing both the table data regarding visitor numbers and the survey charts regarding visitor satisfaction. A clear overview is provided in the second paragraph, highlighting the overall increase in visitors and satisfaction levels. Key features are selected and reported accurately, such as the rise in visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000, and the shift in satisfaction categories (with 'Very satisfied' increasing from 15% to 35% and 'Dissatisfied' dropping from 40% to 15%). Comparisons are made effectively between the two time periods, meeting all requirements of Academic Task 1 without significant omissions or inaccuracies.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall progression and is logically organized into distinct paragraphs, moving from an introduction and overview to specific details on visitor numbers and survey results. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Overall', 'It is evident that', and 'It can be seen that'. However, referencing and transitions are occasionally slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different visual data sets, contributing to a coherent structure overall, though slightly more fluid linking between sentences would elevate the score further.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'refurbishment', 'significantly increased', 'percentage', and 'combined'. There are some attempts at less common vocabulary, though a few awkward word choices and collocations occur, such as 'In a result of that' instead of 'As a result' and 'doomed' instead of 'dropped' or 'plummeted'. Spelling is generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication, allowing the reader to easily follow the data points being reported.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The writer demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures effectively. There are several grammatical errors present, such as missing articles ('in year before and after'), preposition errors ('in year before', 'in a result of that'), and a minor punctuation issue ('doubled it's portion'). Despite these errors, the majority of sentences are understandable, and communication is rarely impeded. The control of grammar is sufficient for a competent band 6 performance.
