IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.5)
The table and the pie charts show the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum in the years before and after its refurbishment and the results of a survey conducted about their experience at the museum, respectively.
Overall, the refurbishment was quite a success. As a result, the number of visitors increased, and the survey showed that the overall satisfaction level rose after the refurbishment.
It is evident that the number of visitors to the museum significantly increased from 74,000 to 92,000 after the renovations. After the renovations, the percentage of people in the "Very satisfied" section more than doubled its portion from 15% to 35%, whereas the "Dissatisfied" section dropped from 40% to just 15%, showing that people were enjoying the newly renovated museum more than before.
It can be seen that the satisfaction categories combined took over nearly three quarters compared with the dissatisfaction category, which was half before the refurbishment. This showed a major jump in satisfaction, leaving just 20% overall dissatisfaction. In both cases, 5% of the people did not give any response to the survey.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The student has successfully addressed all parts of the task. Both the table regarding visitor numbers and the survey charts depicting visitor satisfaction are accurately summarized and compared. An appropriate and clear overview is provided at the beginning, noting the increase in visitor numbers and the overall rise in satisfaction levels. Key features, such as the growth in visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000 and the significant shift in the 'Very satisfied' and 'Dissatisfied' categories, are well reported with accurate figures from the visual data. The selection of information is relevant and fully supports the requirements of Academic Task 1 without unnecessary digression.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0
The response is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas from the introduction to the overview, followed by specific details regarding visitor numbers and survey results. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different aspects of the visual data. Cohesive devices are managed well, using words and phrases such as 'Overall', 'As a result', 'It is evident that', and 'whereas' to connect ideas smoothly and guide the reader through the text without confusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and flexible range of vocabulary suited to a visual data task. Appropriate terms such as 'refurbishment', 'percentage', 'significantly increased', and 'categories' are used correctly. There is an attempt to use less common vocabulary like 'substantially' or equivalent phrasing, though some expressions could be more precise (e.g., 'more than doubled its portion'). Word choices are generally accurate, and spelling and word formation are error-free, allowing for smooth communication.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
A good mix of simple and complex sentence structures is utilized throughout the response. Complex sentences are formed successfully using subordinate clauses and participial structures (e.g., 'showing that people were enjoying the newly renovated museum more than before'). The majority of sentences are error-free, and grammatical control is strong. Punctuation is used correctly to separate clauses and aid clarity, placing this performance comfortably within the Band 7 range.
