Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0
The student attempts to address all parts of the prompt by citing visitor numbers (74,000 and 92,000) and survey data for Ashdown Museum before and after refurbishment. An overview is attempted in the second sentence. However, the response falls just short of the 150-word minimum (containing 149 words), which incurs a penalty under the length guidelines. Furthermore, some data points are misreported or confusingly described; for example, the student states that dissatisfied visitors were 40 percent in both years and that very satisfied visitors 'sky rocketed to 15 to 35 after refurbishment', which is somewhat muddled. While key features are selected, the lack of careful proofreading and the under-length status limit the score.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 4.5
The text lacks proper paragraphing and is presented as a single, dense block of text, which severely hinders logical progression. Cohesive devices are either missing or used inaccurately (e.g., 'more over', 'further'). Sentences run together without punctuation, creating a heavy reliance on comma splices and lowercase starts at the beginning of sentences (e.g., 'overall the total number...', 'however this difference...'). Although there is a chronological attempt to contrast the 'before' and 'after' periods, the overall structural organization fails to achieve a clear, cohesive flow.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.0
The student demonstrates a limited range of vocabulary with frequent lexical and collocational inaccuracies. Examples include 'surge increase', 'visitors satisfaction', and describing changes awkwardly such as 'modest increase to30 to 35'. There are also spelling mistakes ('vistors', 'disatisfied', 'perecent'). While some task-specific terms are present (such as 'refurbished', 'survey', 'museum'), the control over less common vocabulary is weak, and basic words are frequently misspelled or misused, impeding overall fluency.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 4.5
Grammatical control is weak throughout the response. The text is plagued by run-on sentences, missing capitalisation, and absent punctuation. Basic agreement and tense errors are evident, such as 'The pie chart illustrate' (plural/singular mismatch) and 'tourists have visited To Ashdown museum before and the year after refurbished'. Complex structures are attempted clumsily, resulting in frequent errors that cause difficulty for the reader and obscure meaning in places. Simple sentences are also frequently ungrammatical.
