Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of visitor numbers and survey results while making relevant comparisons. An overview is provided in the second paragraph, contrasting the total visitor figures and the shift towards more positive feedback. Key data points are cited correctly, such as the rise in visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000, and the changes in satisfaction categories. However, there are minor inaccuracies in interpreting the survey percentages as exact visitor numbers (e.g., stating satisfied reviews increased from '30 to 40 thousand', whereas the charts show percentages). Overall, the response meets the requirements well.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The essay is organized into four logical paragraphs: an introduction, an overview, and two body paragraphs detailing specific data points. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader, such as 'Overall', 'However', and 'In comparison'. However, referencing and transitional phrases occasionally feel somewhat mechanical or slightly awkward, such as 'Additionally to the increase' and 'Prior refurbishment'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overview from the specific details, ensuring a clear overall progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common lexical items such as 'refurbishment', 'substantially', and 'significantly'. However, there are notable word-choice errors and spelling mistakes throughout the text, including 'survay', 'statisfied', 'Dissatified', and 'unchaged'. Collocations are occasionally weak, such as 'feedback result in substantial increase' instead of 'resulted in a substantial increase'. While these errors do not impede overall communication, they restrict the lexical score to band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response contains a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'Visitors who gave No response remained unchanged before and after the renovation.' There are several grammatical and punctuation errors, including prepositions and verb forms (e.g., 'visitors, who visited to the Ashdown Museum when it was not renovated', 'visitors before the refurbishment was at less', and 'reviews were droped'). Despite these errors, the meaning remains clear, and the control of grammar is sufficient to allow easy reading of the text.
