Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
The student attempts to cover the main features of the prompt, noting the overall increase in visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000 and highlighting changes in satisfaction levels, such as the rise in very satisfied visitors. However, the response suffers from significant weaknesses in data reporting and clarity. The overview paragraph is extremely vague, containing non-standard phrasing and grammatical errors ('hight amount of people show how satisfied they are after reufrbishment'). Furthermore, some data points are misinterpreted or inaccurately stated, and the structure lacks a well-developed, clear summary of the data as a whole. Overall, the performance aligns with the Band 4 descriptors, as the response is limited and contains frequent inaccuracies in task interpretation and data selection.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
The text is divided into paragraphs, which provides a basic structural framework, but the logical organisation and overall progression are severely disrupted by poor referencing, lack of clear cohesive devices, and numerous mechanical errors. Transitional phrases like 'On one hand' and 'On the other hand' are misused because the data presented does not represent contrasting arguments or opposing views, but rather different survey metrics and categories. Additionally, referencing is frequently unclear, making it difficult to follow the progression of ideas. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal cohesion within paragraphs is faulty, leading to a disjointed and confusing read. This places the response firmly within the Band 4 category for coherence and cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.0
The vocabulary used throughout the response is extremely basic, repetitive, and plagued by severe spelling and word-choice errors. Examples of incorrect spelling and word formation include 'illustraet', 'befor', 'refurbished', 'precent', 'pepole', 'thire', 'opineon', 'hight', 'reufrbishment', 'Moreove', 'persanteg', 'how', 'visitores', 'satisfiend', 'declines', 'did not response', and 'chane'. The student attempts some topic-related vocabulary such as 'visitors', 'museum', and 'satisfaction', but the high frequency of lexical errors significantly strains the reader and impedes communication. The lexical range is extremely limited, meeting the criteria for a Band 4 score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
The grammatical range is very limited, relying primarily on simple sentences alongside poorly constructed, faulty attempts at complex structures. There is a persistent lack of control over basic grammatical rules, including subject-verb agreement, tense consistency, and punctuation. Examples of severe grammatical errors include 'The table illustraet the amount of visitors', 'pepole how has no response', 'the number of visitores increase', and 'thire is chane from for about 5 persent'. Punctuation and capitalization are also widely neglected (e.g., lowercase letters at the beginnings of sentences and proper nouns). These frequent, basic errors distort meaning and make the text difficult to parse, fitting the Band 4 descriptors.
