Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the people who visited the Ashdown Museum before and after the refurbishment, While the chart shows the result of surveys questioning visitors about how satisfied they were with the museum, during the same two periods.

Overall, we can clearly observe spike in the number of visitors before and after the refurbishment. Moreover, visitors are more satisfied with the meseum after the refurbishment.

At the first glance, if we see the number of visitors and their reviews before the refurbishment of the museum, it is far less than afterwards.

74,000 visited the museum, 50 percent of those people were dissatisfied with the meusem consisting 10 percent of those who were very dissatisfied. 15 and 30 percent were very satisfied and satisfied respectively. 5 percent decided to not review.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the table and the charts. The overall trends are correctly identified, noting an increase in visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000, along with an improvement in visitor satisfaction following the refurbishment. Key data points are cited accurately, such as the percentages for various satisfaction categories before and after the intervention. The overview is clearly stated in the second paragraph, meeting the core requirements of academic task 1. However, there are minor inaccuracies in some percentage calculations or phrasing (e.g., combining dissatisfied categories slightly loosely), but overall the information is well selected and reported, earning a solid Band 7.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response is logically organised into introduction, overview, and body paragraphs that address the table and charts respectively. Cohesive devices are used to guide the reader through the data, such as 'Overall', 'At the first glance', and 'After the refurbishment'. However, paragraphing is slightly unconventional, with some very short paragraphs that disrupt the flow. Referencing is generally clear, though transitional phrases between sentences can feel somewhat mechanical at times. While progression is visible throughout, the structural partitioning prevents the response from reaching higher bands. Therefore, a Band 6.0 is appropriate for Coherence and Cohesion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'refurbishment', 'satisfaction level', 'uptrend', and 'respectively'. There are, however, noticeable spelling and word choice errors, including 'meseum' and 'meusem' instead of museum, and awkward phrasing like 'No review visitors remains same'. Less common lexical items are attempted with mixed success. The range is sufficient to convey the main points clearly, but the recurring spelling mistakes and occasional imprecise collocations keep the score at Band 6.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting relative clauses and introductory dependent clauses (e.g., 'While the chart shows...', 'if we see the number of visitors...'). There are several grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, such as a comma splice in the opening sentence ('...after the refurbishment, While the chart...'), subject-verb agreement issues ('visitors remains same'), and missing prepositions or articles. Despite these frequent errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and communication remains generally clear. This performance aligns well with the descriptors for Band 6.0.
