IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the number of visitors who visited the Ashdown Museum before and after the refurbishment, while the charts show the result of surveys asking visitors about their satisfaction with the visit, during the same two periods.

Overall, we can clearly observe increase in the number of visitors before and after the refurbishment. Moreover, visitors are more satisfied with the museum after the refurbishment.

Before the refurbishment, the number of visitors were far less and their reviews were not satisfied with the visit compare with the visit following the refurbishment. 74,000 visitors visited the museum before refurbishment, 50% of the visitors were dissatisfied with the museum including 10% proportion of those who were very dissatisfied. Only 15% and 30% were very satisfied and satisfied, respectively. 5% gave no response.

After the refurbishment, the charts of the visitors and their satisfaction levels showed improvement. In total there were 92,000 visitors which is approximately 24 percent higher then previous survey. This time, 40 and 35 percent of visitors were satisfied and very satisfied respectively. Only 20 percent were dissatisfied, including 5 percent with very dissatisfaction. 5% of visitors gave no response again.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the table and the charts. An overview is provided, highlighting the general increase in visitor numbers and improved satisfaction levels. Key data points are accurately cited, such as the visitor numbers (74,000 rising to 92,000) and the specific percentages for satisfaction categories. Comparisons are made between the two periods, noting the roughly 24 percent increase in visitors and the shift towards positive feedback. The response is fully relevant and grounded in the provided visual data, meeting all requirements for this criterion at a Band 7.0 level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response is logically organised with a clear introduction, an overview paragraph, and two body paragraphs dedicated to the periods before and after refurbishment. Cohesive devices are used adequately, such as 'Overall', 'Moreover', and 'After the refurbishment', ensuring a logical progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. However, referencing and transitions are sometimes a bit mechanical ('the charts of the visitors'), which prevents the response from achieving a higher band. Overall, the logical structure is clear and easy to follow, supporting a Band 6.5 score.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms related to data reporting and surveys, such as 'refurbishment', 'proportion', 'dissatisfied', and 'approximately'. There are some minor lexical inaccuracies and awkward word choices, such as 'reviews were not satisfied' instead of 'ratings showed dissatisfaction', and 'very dissatisfaction' instead of 'very dissatisfied'. However, these errors do not impede communication. Less common vocabulary is attempted with reasonable success, placing the response firmly in the Band 6.0 category.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses ('who visited the Ashdown Museum') and comparative structures ('is approximately 24 percent higher then previous survey'). There are some grammatical errors and inaccuracies, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('the number of visitors were') and a spelling/preposition slip ('higher then' instead of 'higher than'). Punctuation is generally acceptable. While complex structures are attempted, errors persist and prevent a higher band, making Band 6.0 an appropriate score.
