Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table demonstrates the number of tourists visiting Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was redeveloped. The charts illustrate result of research asking how re-assured the tourists were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Overall, the number of visitors increased after the museum was redesigned. Before refurbishment, people were more dissatified than satisfied but after redevelopment of the museum the results were opposite.

Before refurbishment, the total number of people visiting the museum were 74,000 but after redevelopment the number of people surged to 92,000. The year before refurbishment about 40% visitors were dissatisfied, allocating the highest proportion at that time. Following that, only 30% of visitors were satisfied at that peiod.

In contrast, the year after redevelopment those people who were dissatisfied dropped drastically to exactly 15% of the total. Meanwhile, the proportion of very satisfied people grew substantially from 15% to just over a third. Satisfied visitors also increased by 10% after reburishment. Very dissatisfied people dropped from 10% to just 5% and people who gave no response remained unchanged throughout both period, which was about 5% of the total.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The student successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by summarizing the main features of both the table and the satisfaction charts. An overview is provided, highlighting the general increase in visitor numbers and the positive shift in satisfaction levels. Key data points are accurately reported, such as the rise in visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000, and the proportions of dissatisfaction before (40%) and after (15%) refurbishment. Comparisons are made effectively between the two periods. The response meets all task requirements thoroughly, demonstrating a clear understanding of the visual data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The text is logically organized into four paragraphs with a clear introduction, overview, and body paragraphs focusing on visitor numbers and survey results respectively. Progression is evident and easy to follow. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Before refurbishment', 'In contrast', and 'Meanwhile' are used appropriately to link ideas and signal shifts in time or data. Paragraphing is logical, separating the introduction/overview from the specific data points. However, referencing is occasionally repetitive, which prevents the essay from reaching higher bands.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

The student uses an adequate and appropriate range of vocabulary for the task, incorporating terms like 'redeveloped', 'refurbishment', 'proportion', 'surged', and 'substantially'. There are a few minor lexical inaccuracies or awkward word choices, such as 're-assured' instead of 'satisfied' or 'how satisfied' and 'peiod' (spelling error). However, less common items are attempted with some awareness of style and collocation, and these minor errors do not impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The essay displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, using clauses of time and contrast effectively (e.g., 'Before refurbishment, the total number of people visiting the museum were 74,000 but after redevelopment...'). There is a noticeable subject-verb agreement error ('the total number of people visiting the museum were' instead of 'was'). Other minor slips occur, such as missing articles ('at that peiod', 'throughout both period'). Despite these errors, punctuation and sentence forms are generally controlled and communication is never impeded.
