Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
The student covers all parts of the task well, providing data on visitor numbers (74,000 to 92,000) and reporting the survey results for satisfaction levels across both periods. An overview is present at the beginning of the second paragraph, noting the overall increase in satisfaction and the constant no-response rate. However, there are some mathematical inaccuracies in describing the changes; for instance, the student states that dissatisfaction 'reduced by 25% after the refurbishment' (whereas it dropped from 40% to 15%, an absolute drop of 25 percentage points, which could be misconstrued as a relative drop or sloppy phrasing). Overall, key features are highlighted and compared adequately, placing it securely in the Band 6.5 to 7 range.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response is arranged logically with an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs dedicated to visitor numbers and survey results. Cohesive devices such as 'Overall', 'Initially', and 'However' are used to structure the text, though transitions can feel slightly mechanical. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate ideas. Referencing is generally clear, though minor improvements in linking clauses would enhance the natural flow of the report. The progression of information is reasonably clear throughout, supporting a solid Band 6.5 performance.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully using terms like 'refurbishment', 'satisfaction level', and 'dissatisfied'. There are some awkward phrasings or word choices, such as 'visitors with no response were of same percentage both the time' and 'the museum refurbished' (instead of 'was refurbished'). Less common lexical items are attempted with mixed success. Spelling is generally accurate, but vocabulary choice lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands, placing this comfortably at Band 6.0.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The writer employs a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including relative clauses and contrastive connectors ('While visitors with...'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward structures, such as 'The table and chart illustrates' (subject-verb agreement error with plural compound subject), missing articles ('survey of visitors'), and punctuation slips. Although these errors do not impede overall communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent the score from reaching Band 6.5 or higher.
