IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

The table illustrates total number of people visiting the Ahdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. Moreover, the two pie charts presents the outcome of surveys asking visitors about their satisfaction level during these two periods.

Overall, the number of visitors during the year before renovation was 74,000 whereas, those after redecoration were increased to 92,000. The result of satisfied visitors before the museum was reconstructed showed a significant increase in most satisfied ones with a moderate rise in the satisfied ones, while there is a significant increase among the dissatisfied individual and the people who gave no response remained the same in both the periods.

The data from the year before refurbishment shows satisfaction of 15 people visiting the museum, contrasting that there is a significant growth upto 35 visitors after the redecoration.

Those who were satisfied the year before comprises 30, whereas after reconstruction the number of satisfied individuals rose up to 40.

There are also some dissatisfied ones, constituting about 40 before the renovation, while afterwards, the number dropped to even a below half, 15 visitors.

The very dissatisfied tourists got a marginal decrease, just about 5, which is a modest change from the previous period with 10 dissatisfied travellers.

The visitors who lack responses remained almost identical in values, 5 in both the periods.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The student covers all parts of the task well, providing data for the table and both charts. An overview is included, noting the increase in visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000. Key features and comparisons are highlighted, such as the changes in satisfaction levels (e.g., very satisfied increasing from 15 to 35, and dissatisfied dropping from 40 to 15). However, there are some minor misreadings or confusing expressions regarding the survey data, such as treating the percentage/proportion data as absolute numbers of people in sentences like 'satisfaction of 15 people visiting the museum', whereas the charts represent survey percentages or sample distributions out of the total. Despite this slight confusion over units, the main trends are adequately captured, earning a solid Band 6.5.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response is arranged logically with an introduction, an overview paragraph, and detailed body paragraphs discussing specific aspects of the charts. Cohesive devices are used to connect ideas, such as 'Moreover', 'Overall', and 'whereas'. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the table overview from the detailed survey breakdowns. However, referencing and progression can occasionally feel slightly mechanical or repetitive in structure (e.g., starting multiple sentences with 'Those who...' or 'The data from...'). Nevertheless, there is a clear overall progression that guides the reader successfully through the visual data, satisfying the requirements for Band 6.5.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'refurbished', 'redecoration', 'significantly', and 'constituting'. There are some word choice errors and typos, such as spelling 'Ahdown' instead of 'Ashdown' and using awkward phrasing like 'the visitors who lack responses' instead of 'no response'. Less common lexical items are attempted, but occasional inaccuracies in collocation and word formation occur (e.g., 'most satisfied ones' instead of 'the most satisfied group'). Overall, the vocabulary is sufficient to communicate the main points clearly, aligning well with a Band 6.0 descriptor.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and subordinate structures (e.g., 'The table illustrates total number of people visiting... while those after redecoration were increased...'). There are several grammatical errors and awkward passive/active transitions, such as 'were increased' instead of 'increased', and 'got a marginal decrease'. Punctuation is generally acceptable, and while errors occur, they rarely impede communication. The control over grammar is characteristic of Band 6, showing a reasonable attempt at complex structures alongside recurring minor errors.
