IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The given graphic presents the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum and their satisfaction levels in the year prior to and after its refurbishment. The satisfaction level of the visitors was measured on a five-point scale, from "very satisfied" to "no response".
The total number of visitors to Ashdown Museum rose by an additional 18,000 in the year after it was refurbished, from 74,000 in the year prior. Before refurbishment, half of the the total 74,000 visitors were either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, while 45% of total visitors were either satisfied or very satisfied. 5% of visitors gave no response to the satisfaction survey.
After the refurbishment, three-quarters of the total 92,000 visitors were either very satisifed or highly satisfied. Visitors who were either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied dropped to only one-fifth of the total number. However, the number of visitors who gave no response remained the same.
Overall, the graphic indicates that the refurbishment of Ashdown Museum not only increased the number of visitors but also significantly raised satisfaction levels for them.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The student successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting both the visitor numbers from the table and the satisfaction survey results from the charts. The overview in the concluding paragraph accurately highlights the main trends—an increase in total visitors and a significant improvement in satisfaction levels. Key data points are correctly cited, such as the rise from 74,000 to 92,000 visitors, and the percentage breakdowns for both surveyed periods are accurately represented. The response is fully grounded in the provided visual data with no misreadings or invented figures. The task is addressed comprehensively, meriting a high band score.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The response is logically organized with a clear introduction, well-defined body paragraphs separating the two survey periods, and a concise concluding overview. Information flows smoothly from overall figures to detailed survey statistics. Cohesive devices are used effectively, such as 'Before refurbishment,' 'After the refurbishment,' and 'However,' ensuring clear logical progression throughout the text. Paragraphing is used appropriately, with each paragraph focusing on a distinct aspect of the visual data. Referencing is clear and easy to follow.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student demonstrates a sufficient and appropriate range of vocabulary for this task type. Phrases like 'satisfaction levels,' 'prior to and after its refurbishment,' and 'drop to only one-fifth' show good lexical control. There is some successful use of less common vocabulary and synonyms to avoid repetition, such as 'rose' and 'increased.' Minor spelling or word-choice errors occur occasionally, such as 'satisifed' (a typographical error) and 'highly satisfied' (whereas the chart uses 'satisfied'), but these do not impede communication and reflect a competent command of lexical resources.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 7.0
The writing contains a good mix of simple and complex sentence structures, including subordinate clauses and comparative constructions (e.g., 'Before refurbishment, half of the total 74,000 visitors were either dissatisfied or very dissatisfied, while 45% of total visitors were either satisfied or very satisfied'). Grammatical control is generally strong with a high proportion of error-free sentences. There is a minor repetition of 'the the' in the second paragraph, but this represents a rare slip rather than a systematic weakness. Punctuation and sentence boundaries are handled well throughout.
