Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully covers all parts of the prompt by summarising both the visitor numbers table and the satisfaction survey charts. An overview is present, and key features such as the overall upward trend in visitor numbers and the shift in satisfaction levels are highlighted. Data is accurately reported, noting the increase from 74,000 to 92,000 visitors and correctly referencing the survey percentages. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed, particularly in the overview where the explanation of satisfaction changes is basic. To reach a higher level, the response would need to extend and support its comparisons more fully throughout the body paragraphs without relying on repetitive phrasing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and attempts to organise information logically, separating the overview, visitor numbers, and survey data into paragraphs. However, the progression between ideas is sometimes mechanical and lacks smooth transitions. Cohesive devices are used repetitively, such as the frequent reliance on 'respectively' used incorrectly or awkwardly at the end of sentences (e.g., 'dissatisfied fell to 15% respectively'). Referencing is also occasionally unclear, and paragraphing could be structured more effectively to group related data points together. To improve, the writer needs to employ a wider range of cohesive devices naturally and ensure clear logical progression from one point to the next.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer demonstrates an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms such as 'upward trend', 'refurbishment', and 'proportion'. Less common vocabulary is attempted, but with noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, collocation, and word form. For instance, writing 'fedback' instead of 'feedback', 'disatisfied' with a single 's', and awkward phrases like 'very satisfaction' or 'did not gave any response'. These lexical errors do not seriously impede communication, allowing the reader to grasp the core meaning, but they prevent the writing from achieving a higher band. Enhancing precision in word formation and mastering common collocations will elevate the lexical score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, such as introductory subordinate clauses ('Before the refurbishment took place...'). There are frequent grammatical and punctuation errors throughout the text, including missing articles ('in museum'), incorrect verb forms ('visited to a museum know as', 'did not gave'), and run-on sentences lacking proper punctuation. While these errors rarely completely impede communication, they are frequent enough to cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a limited control of complex grammatical structures. To progress, the student must focus on reducing basic grammatical slips, ensuring correct subject-verb agreement, and using proper punctuation for complex sentences.
