IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table presents the number of visitors to Ashdown Museum before and after the renovation and the charts illustrate the data of visitors satisfaction during the two periods.

Overall, the largest percentage of visitors were dissatisfied before refurbishment, while after renovation, the satisfaction of visitors increased sharply, holding the largest share of the chart.

Before the refurbishment, around 74,000 visitors visited the museum while 40% visitors expressed dissatisfaction. 30% of visitors accounted satisfied with the museum followed by 15% of visitors expressing very satified with the museum. Visitors expressed very dissatisfaction around at 10% compared with 5% of visitors shared no response.

The visitors increased from 74000 to 92000, a sharp increase after the refurbishment. The numbers of visitors were satified after the renovation was 40%, the largest proportion in the chart, followed by 35% of very satisfied visitors. 15% of visitors were still dissatisfied with the museum while 5% of visitors accounted for very dissatisfied and another 5% of visitors chose no response.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main visitor numbers and survey results for both periods, successfully bridging the gap between a Band 6 and Band 7 level. An overview is provided that highlights the main trend, noting that visitor numbers and overall satisfaction increased significantly after the renovation. Key data points are selected and compared, such as the rise from 74,000 to 92,000 visitors and the shift from dissatisfaction to satisfaction. However, some ideas remain slightly under-developed, and certain figures are presented as isolated statistics rather than fully extended comparisons, which keeps the response at this level. To reach higher, the overview could integrate the survey findings more cohesively with the attendance figures from the outset.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear paragraph structure separating the introduction, overview, and body details. Information flows logically from visitor volume data to specific satisfaction percentages. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or repetitive in its sentence openings, such as starting multiple sentences with 'visitors' or 'percentage of visitors'. Referencing is generally clear, but paragraph transitions could be smoother to establish a more sophisticated progression of ideas. To improve further, the writer should use a wider variety of cohesive devices to link related points across sentences rather than relying on standard sequential listing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical data and survey categories with terms like 'refurbishment', 'proportion', and 'satisfaction'. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'substantially' or related descriptive terms, but encounters some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'accounted satisfied' instead of 'accounted for' or 'were satisfied', and 'very dissatisfaction' instead of 'very dissatisfied'. These lexical errors do not impede communication, but they restrict the score. To achieve a higher band, the writer needs to demonstrate greater precision in word formation and collocation when reporting statistical trends.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The text displays a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, successfully employing comparative and introductory clauses. There are some grammar and punctuation errors present, such as prepositional misuse ('around at 10%'), article omissions, and slight awkwardness in clause structures like 'The numbers of visitors were satified after the renovation was 40%'. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning easily. To move up to a higher band, the writer must increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over subject-verb agreement and prepositional patterns.
