IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

While the given tabular representation demonstrates how the total number of Ashdown Museum visitors varied after its rennovation, the satisfactory rate among visitors regarding this museum has been depicted by the pie charts.

To begin with the table, Ashdown Museum had only 74000 visitors earlier but 18000 more people visited here once it was refurbished.

In terms of visitor satisfaction, the highest proportion of visitors felt dissatisfied with the old layout of museum, accounting for 40%. However, this figure decreased to 15% after refurbishment. By contrast, the percentage of very satisfied visitors soared from 15% to 35%. Interestingly, no response was given by 5% of them each time.

Moving further, 10% visitors seemed to be very dissatisfied before rennovation and this proportion remained half later. Lastly, the satisfaction rate among visitors increased by 10% which was only 30% earlier.

Overall, refurbishment of museum allured more visitors and they started feeling more satisfied with newer layout and services than before.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The response successfully covers all parts of the task by reporting both the visitor numbers from the table and the satisfaction levels from the charts. It presents a clear overview at the beginning and the end. Key features are selected and compared, such as the increase in total visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000 and the notable shift in dissatisfaction rates from 40% down to 15%. However, some parts are slightly under-developed or mechanically presented rather than fully integrated into a cohesive analytical narrative. The response achieves a solid baseline while showing elements of more extended reporting required for higher bands, such as the clear highlighting of contrast in the satisfaction data.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a logical progression from the table data to the survey charts, concluding with a helpful summary paragraph. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different sections of the visual data. Cohesive devices are employed to guide the reader through the comparisons, such as 'To begin with', 'In terms of', 'By contrast', and 'Moving further'. However, some of these cohesive links and referencing feel a bit mechanical and repetitive, which keeps the response at this level. The flow between sentences is generally clear, though smoother transitions would elevate the organizational quality further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully incorporating terms related to data reporting and surveys such as 'proportion', 'percentage', 'decreased', and 'soared'. There are some attempts to use less common vocabulary, though this is occasionally accompanied by spelling and word-choice errors, such as 'rennovation' (renovation) and 'satisfactory rate' (satisfaction rate). Fortunately, these lexical slips do not impede communication, and the meaning remains clear throughout. To move higher, the vocabulary needs to display greater precision and consistency in word choice and spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

The writing exhibits a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating control over basic structures and attempting more intricate constructions such as 'While the given tabular representation demonstrates...' and '...the highest proportion of visitors felt dissatisfied...'. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation, such as missing articles ('layout of museum', '10% visitors') and minor prepositional inconsistencies. However, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the argument easily. The sentence structures are varied enough to show a sound command of grammar suitable for this level.
