Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response addresses all parts of the task, successfully reporting both the visitor numbers from the table and the satisfaction levels from the charts. An overview is provided, highlighting the main trends such as the increase in total visitors and the general rise in satisfaction. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others, and certain details are slightly under-developed or imprecise. For instance, the transition from the dissatisfaction category being the highest before refurbishment to shifting afterward is captured, but some of the specific percentage points and comparisons could be linked more cohesively. The selection of features covers the most salient data points, meeting the requirements for a half-band above the baseline through its adequate coverage and clear overview.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt to structure the information logically into an introduction, an overview, and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different types of data, such as visitor numbers versus survey results. However, cohesion is at times mechanical or faulty. Transition phrases like 'To commence with' feel slightly unnatural in an academic context, and referencing between sentences is occasionally repetitive or stiff. While logical progression is maintained throughout the text, these minor issues with cohesive devices and referencing prevent the response from reaching a higher band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The vocabulary used is adequate for the task, successfully conveying the basic comparisons and trends. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, such as 'upsurged', 'proportion', and 'refurbished', showing an awareness of task-specific language. However, there are noticeable inaccuracies in word choice, word form, and collocation, such as 'proportion of visitor satisfaction level' instead of 'levels of visitor satisfaction', 'shared a largest proportion', and 'ratio of satisfied was also rose'. These occasional errors and awkward collocations do not impede communication, but they clearly place the response at this level, as precision in lexical control is still developing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, incorporating relative clauses like 'who visit Ashdown Museum' and comparative structures. There are some errors in grammar and punctuation throughout the text, including tense consistency issues ('there are 74000 of visitors, who visit... while after refurbishment the number of visitors upsurged'), preposition errors, and missing articles. Additionally, there are minor agreement errors, such as 'ratio of satisfied was also rose'. Nonetheless, these errors are relatively infrequent and rarely impede communication, allowing the reader to follow the intended meaning without serious difficulty, reflecting a solid mix of simple and attempted complex structures.
