Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Given pie charts illustrates the outcome of surveys asking visitors how satisfied there were before refurbishment and after refurbishment.

Overall, during the year after refurbishment visitors increased significantly.

The given pie chart show that year before refurbishment, number of people who were very dissatisfied and satiesfied were the highest figure, at 40 and 30 respectively. Along with that very satisfied people were half of satiesfied people which is 15. however there were 5 people who were shown no response with 10 people who were in very dissatisfied.

However, Year after refurbishment the people who were satiesfied increased slightly at 40. Along with that number of people who were dissatiesfied reduce significantly at 15. Also we can clearly see that number of people who were shown no response are still at 5. But the visitors who were very satiesfied increased significantly from 15 to 35.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

The response only partially addresses the task and fails to meet the minimum length requirement of 150 words, falling slightly short at 144 words. While the writer attempts to summarise the visual data, the coverage is incomplete and inaccurate. For instance, the table providing the total number of visitor figures (74,000 and 92,000) is completely ignored in the text, and only the pie charts regarding satisfaction are discussed. Furthermore, the data points extracted from the charts contain numerous inaccuracies, such as misinterpreting the percentage values or raw numbers (e.g., stating 'there were 5 people who were shown no response with 10 people who were in very dissatisfied'). To improve, you must ensure all parts of the prompt—including tables or overall totals—are addressed, and data from charts is reported accurately.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation to the response, with an attempt at an introduction and separate body paragraphs, but there is no clear overall progression. Paragraphing is rudimentary and cohesive devices are repetitive or inadequately used. For example, the writer overuses transitional phrases like 'along with that' and 'however' at the start of sentences in a mechanical way ('Along with that very satisfied people were half of satiesfied people...', 'However, Year after refurbishment...'). Additionally, referencing is sometimes unclear, and the lack of a comprehensive overview linking the data together prevents the essay from flowing logically. To achieve a higher band, you need to use a wider range of cohesive devices naturally and structure your paragraphs so that ideas progress smoothly from one to the next.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task, with noticeable spelling and word-choice errors that occasionally cause difficulty for the reader. The writer attempts some less common vocabulary related to data trends, such as 'significantly' and 'reduced', but misspells several key words repeatedly, including 'satiesfied' instead of 'satisfied' and 'dissatiesfied'. There are also awkward word choices and phrasing, such as 'visitors increased significantly' and 'people who were shown no response'. These errors stem from a restricted lexical range and inaccurate word forms. To improve, you should expand your vocabulary for describing statistics, pay closer attention to standard spelling, and ensure your word choices collocate naturally in an academic context.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or basic attempts at complex clauses that are frequently faulty. Frequent grammatical errors occur throughout the text, including missing articles, incorrect prepositions, and poor subject-verb agreement or clause construction. For example, the opening sentence 'Given pie charts illustrates...' lacks a necessary article and contains a subject-verb agreement error. Similarly, clauses like 'Year after refurbishment the people who were satiesfied increased slightly at 40' lack proper prepositions and temporal markers. These frequent errors cause some difficulty for the reader. To improve, you should practice constructing more complex sentences accurately, paying close attention to grammatical boundaries, articles, and prepositions.
