Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response makes an attempt to address the prompt by reporting key data from both the table and the charts, such as the visitor numbers of 74,000 and 92,000, and mentioning changes in satisfaction levels. However, the task is only partially addressed because the coverage of data contains inaccuracies and omissions. For instance, the student misinterprets the survey categories by stating that 35 percent of visitors were satisfied and 40 percent were satisfied in a confusing repetition, failing to accurately distinguish between 'very satisfied', 'satisfied', 'dissatisfied', and 'very dissatisfied' across the two periods. Furthermore, while an overview is attempted, it is overly simplistic and fails to adequately highlight the main overarching trends, such as the significant increase in visitor numbers alongside a marked shift from negative to positive satisfaction ratings after the refurbishment.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response demonstrates some organisation with an introduction, body details, and basic paragraph breaks, but it lacks a clear overall progression. Cohesive devices are used mechanically and sometimes inaccurately, such as 'Now turning to the details' and 'Futhermore', which disrupts the natural flow of information. Referencing is also occasionally unclear or repetitive, as seen in the phrasing regarding survey results where data points are introduced without logical sequencing or smooth transitions between the table data and the survey charts. Paragraphing is attempted, but the internal structuring of ideas within the body paragraph is disjointed, making it harder for the reader to follow the comparison effortlessly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary related to the topic, such as 'refurbishment', 'remodeling', and 'renovation', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and form, such as 'tourists to Ashdown Museum' instead of visitors, and 'happy' instead of satisfied. There are also spelling errors like 'Futhermore' and 'satefseid', alongside awkward phrasings such as 'have different opinion'. These lexical shortcomings cause occasional difficulty for the reader and prevent the response from achieving a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response employs a limited range of sentence structures, relying heavily on simple sentences and basic coordination. Attempts at more complex sentences are often faulty, leading to frequent grammatical errors. Examples include tense and auxiliary confusion ('during the year now and than it was restored', 'the numbers of visitors were more year after'), missing articles ('in table there are'), and subject-verb agreement issues ('the total numbers visitors were', 'tourist were satisfied'). Punctuation and capitalization errors, such as missing spaces after periods ('Museum. Futhermore'), are also present. These frequent errors across basic and complex structures cause noticeable strain for the reader.
