IELTS Writing Task 1 question
The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.
Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
The table shows the change in the number of tourists to Ashdown Museum in the year before and the year after the renovation. The two pie charts present the results of opinion questionnaires, which show the change in the proportion of their satisfaction level, between the same two periods.
Overall, the number of tourists increased gradually after the renovation. Before the refurbishment, dissatisfaction accounted for the highest proportion, and no response was the lowest figure. Whereas, after the refurbishment, satisfaction made up the largest share, and no response and very dissatisfied accounted for the lowest.
Before the renovation, visitor numbers were 74,000, rising moderately to 92,000 after the renovation. The satisfaction level had a 30% share before the refurbishment and rose to 40% after it, while the figure for dissatisfaction decreased significantly from 40% to 15% after the renovation. Moreover, the proportion of very satisfied visitors grew considerably from 15% to 35%. Furthermore, the share for very dissatisfied fell from 10% to 5% and the figure for no response remained unchanged before and after the renovation at 5%.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by summarizing the main features of both the table and the pie charts. The overview clearly highlights the overall upward trend in visitor numbers and the shifts in satisfaction levels. Key data points, such as the rise in visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000 and the changes in satisfaction ratings, are accurately reported and compared. The response shows a strong ability to select and highlight relevant data, achieving a standard above the baseline requirements. To reach the highest bands, the student could provide an even deeper integration of the data between the table and charts, perhaps connecting the growth in visitor volume more explicitly with the notable shift from dissatisfaction to satisfaction.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response exhibits a clear overall arrangement with a logical progression of information from the introduction to the overview and body paragraphs. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the overall trends from the specific numerical details. Cohesive devices such as 'Whereas', 'Moreover', and 'Furthermore' are employed to link ideas, though some transitional phrasing feels slightly mechanical or formulaic. Reference words are generally clear, but smoother integration of sentences would elevate the cohesion to a higher standard of fluency. Overall, the text is easy to follow and meets the criteria well while showing minor areas where cohesive flow could be more natural and unobtrusive.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for the task, successfully incorporating terms like 'refurbishment', 'proportion', 'dissatisfaction', and 'considerably'. There are successful attempts to use less common vocabulary items to describe trends and percentages. However, there are minor inaccuracies in word choice and phrasing, such as referring to museum visitors as 'tourists' when the prompt specifies 'visitors', and minor awkwardness in phrases like 'the proportion of their satisfaction level'. Spelling and word formation are generally accurate, and vocabulary errors do not impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the student should demonstrate greater precision in lexical choices and collocation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, utilizing clauses effectively to compare the two periods. There is good control over basic verb tenses used to describe past data, such as 'increased gradually', 'rose moderately', and 'decreased significantly'. Some errors in grammar and punctuation persist, such as minor prepositional or article slips, but they are infrequent and rarely impede communication. The majority of simple sentences are error-free, and complex structures are generally controlled. To reach the next level, the student needs to produce a higher frequency of error-free complex sentences and demonstrate absolute control over more intricate grammatical patterns.
