IELTS Writing Task 1 question

The table below shows the numbers of visitors to Ashdown Museum during the year before and the year after it was refurbished. The charts show the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the same two periods.

Summarise the information by selecting and reporting the main features, and make comparisons where relevant.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The table illustrates the number of visitors to Ash-down Museum during the year before and the year it was refurbished, while, the chart compares the result of surveys asking visitors how satisfied they were with their visit, during the both periods.

Overall, the museum experienced significant increase in visitor numbers following the refurbishment. At the same time, visitors satisfaction improved considerably, with the proportion of people who were satisfied rising, while the percentage of dissatisfied visitors fall sharply.

Before the refurbishment, the museum attracted 74,000 visitors. This figure increased substantially to 92,000 in the following year, representing a rise approximately 18,000 visitors. However, this suggest that the improvement made to the museum had a positive effect on its popularity.

The survey results also indicate a clear improvement in visitor's opinion. Before the refurbishment, only 15% of visitors were very satisfied, while 30% were satisfied. In contrast, the proportion who were very satisfied increased dramatically to 35% after the work was completed, and the percentage who were satisfied rose to 40% respectively. Meanwhile, the proportion who were dissatisfied declined from 10% to just 5% and the no response still same.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task, successfully covering both the table and the charts by reporting main features and making relevant comparisons. Note that 23 words copied from the prompt were excluded from the official word count, but the response still comfortably exceeds the minimum length. Key data points are accurately identified, such as the visitor numbers rising from 74,000 to 92,000 and the shifts in satisfaction levels. However, some ideas are slightly under-developed or less fully explained, such as the minor misreading in the survey data where dissatisfaction and very dissatisfaction percentages were conflated at the end of the text. To reach a higher band, the student would need to ensure all reported data points precisely match the visual source without minor data confusion and extend the analysis of trends more thoroughly throughout.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response presents a coherent overall arrangement with a clear chronological and thematic progression from the table data to the survey charts. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, overall summary, table details, and survey findings. Cohesive devices are employed adequately to link ideas, such as "Overall," "In contrast," and "Meanwhile." However, cohesion occasionally feels slightly mechanical or referencing lacks precision, such as the comma splice in the opening sentence ("while, the chart compares") and awkward transitional framing in "this suggest that." To achieve a higher level, the student should ensure cohesive links flow more naturally and seamlessly integrate referencing across sentences without punctuation faults.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

The vocabulary used is generally adequate for the task, successfully conveying numerical changes and survey opinions using terms like "significant increase," "considerable," "proportion," and "dramatically." The student attempts less common vocabulary, but this is accompanied by some inaccuracies in word choice, form, and spelling. For instance, "Ash-down" misspells the museum name, "visitors satisfaction" lacks the correct possessive form, "fall sharply" uses the wrong tense, and "no response still same" is unidiomatic and grammatically incomplete. These errors do not impede overall communication, but to progress further, the writer needs greater precision in collocations and flawless spelling of key terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The student demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, attempting structures like subordinate clauses introduced by "while" and relative markers. There are, however, some recurring errors in grammar and punctuation. Examples include agreement and prepositional slips such as "a rise approximately 18,000 visitors" (missing the preposition "of"), "this suggest" (subject-verb agreement error with a singular demonstrative pronoun), and incorrect comma usage separating clauses awkwardly. While these errors rarely impede communication, the presence of frequent minor structural slips limits the score. Achieving a higher band requires a broader variety of error-free complex sentences and tighter control over basic grammatical agreements and prepositions.
