Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

The response covers both parts of the prompt by mentioning the visitor numbers and the survey results before and after refurbishment. However, the task is only partially addressed because some data points are misreported or awkwardly handled. For instance, the student states that 40 people showed dissatisfaction, whereas the visual data shows percentages rather than raw headcounts, treating the figures as people. Additionally, the overview is very basic, simply stating that the result shows the experience of visitors. To reach a higher band, the overview needs to synthesize the main trends more clearly—such as highlighting the overall rise in visitor numbers and the shift towards higher satisfaction—and ensure that data is cited accurately as percentages where appropriate.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

There is some organisation in the essay, with an attempt to introduce the topic, provide an overview, and break down the details into body paragraphs. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the logical flow is hindered by awkward paragraphing and repetitive phrasing. Cohesive devices are used mechanically or inadequately, such as starting body paragraphs with 'To begin with' and relying heavily on 'meanwhile'. Furthermore, referencing and pronoun use lack precision, making it difficult to follow the progression of comparisons between the two periods. To improve, the student should use a wider variety of transitional markers and ensure that ideas are sequenced logically with clear progression throughout the response.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common vocabulary such as 'refurbishment', 'development', and 'dissatisfaction', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice and word formation, such as writing 'turists', 'incereased', and 'refuse to give their response' instead of refusing or declining. Spelling and morphological errors occur frequently throughout the text, which occasionally causes difficulty for the reader. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their lexical range, pay closer attention to correct word forms and derivations, and ensure accurate spelling of common academic terms.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple sentences and basic past tense forms. Attempts at complex sentences are often faulty, as seen in errors with subject-verb agreement and pluralisation, such as 'The pie-chart above illustrate', '74000 peoples', and '35 peoples that agrees to highly satisfaction'. Frequent errors in grammar, punctuation, and articles persist throughout the response, which can cause strain and difficulty for the reader. To improve, the student needs to incorporate a wider variety of error-free complex structures, pay careful attention to subject-verb agreement, and ensure correct prepositional and grammatical patterns are used.
