Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the task by reporting the main features of both the table and the charts, making relevant comparisons between the two periods. An overview is present, highlighting the overall increase in visitor numbers and satisfaction levels. However, some aspects are slightly under-developed; for instance, the specific details regarding satisfaction categories are somewhat repetitive in their delivery. The data is generally accurate, noting the rise from 74,000 to 92,000 visitors and the shifts in survey responses. To reach a higher band, the overview could be more integrated and the selection of key features could be more sharply focused without over-relying on listing every percentage.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement and follows a logical structure, dividing the information into an introduction, an overview, and separate body paragraphs for the two periods. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the table data from the survey results. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical or faulty, with transitional phrases like 'In contrast' used slightly awkwardly in the context of the data breakdown. Referencing is generally clear, but the progression within paragraphs could be smoother to avoid a list-like feel. To improve further, the writer should employ a wider range of cohesive devices more naturally and ensure tighter logical links between sentences.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting less common items such as 'refurbishment', 'proportion', and 'substantially'. There are, however, some noticeable word choice and collocation inaccuracies, such as 'proportions of review on museum' instead of 'survey results regarding the museum' and writing '92000' without a comma. Spelling is generally accurate, and the errors present do not impede communication. To achieve a higher score, the writer needs to demonstrate more precision in lexical selection and collocation, avoiding awkward phrasing when discussing statistical data.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response features a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating a decent attempt at structuring sentences, such as using introductory subordinate clauses. There are, however, some recurring grammar errors in tense consistency, subject-verb agreement, and prepositions, such as 'the charts illustrates' instead of 'illustrate' and 'where 40% are dissatisfied' mixing past and present tenses. Punctuation is sometimes missing, particularly around lists and clauses. These errors rarely impede communication, but they place the response firmly in this band. To improve, the writer must exercise better control over complex sentence structures and ensure grammatical consistency throughout.
