Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response only partially addresses the task requirements. While the student attempts to present the main data points, such as the visitor numbers (74,000 and 92,000) and general satisfaction levels, the overview is extremely vague and confused, referring to 'moderate' satisfaction without clear reference to the charts. Furthermore, important details are misreported or obscured by faulty expression, such as the claim about dissatisfied masses. Additionally, the length requirement is not met, as the response falls short of the 150-word minimum by 16 words. To reach a higher level, the writer needs to ensure all parts of the prompt are covered clearly and accurately with a well-defined overview, while meeting the minimum word count.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
There is some organisation with basic attempts at paragraphing and linking phrases, such as 'Overall,' and 'moving ahead,'. However, there is no clear overall progression, and the transitions between sentences feel disjointed and mechanical. Referencing and cohesive devices are inadequate or inaccurate, making the flow difficult to follow at times. For example, expressions like 'To fleeting glance' are unnatural and fail to guide the reader logically through the comparisons. To improve, the writer should use standard, accurate cohesive devices and ensure that each sentence logically follows from the previous one to build a coherent comparison.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited and barely adequate for the task. There are noticeable errors in word choice, spelling, and word formation that cause difficulty for the reader, such as 'individuls', 'crystle', 'refubishment', 'visiters', 'reconstuction', 'dissatisfifed', 'rennovation', 'miner', and 'responce'. The student attempts some less common vocabulary, but these frequent lexical inaccuracies and misspellings impede communication. To achieve a higher band, the student must expand their vocabulary range and pay close attention to accurate spelling and word forms appropriate for an academic report.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The response displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying mostly on simple sentences or faulty complex structures. There are frequent grammatical errors, including issues with verb forms and tenses (e.g., 'how many individuls visit to Ashdown Museum', '74,000 visiters were visit'), subject-verb agreement, and articles. These errors occur frequently and can cause difficulty for the reader. To improve, the writer needs to demonstrate better control over basic grammatical structures, ensure correct verb tenses are used when describing past data, and reduce the frequency of structural errors.
