Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the table and the two pie charts. Key features, such as the rise in visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000 and the shift in satisfaction levels from predominantly 'dissatisfied' before refurbishment to 'very satisfied' and 'satisfied' afterwards, are accurately reported. However, some parts of the response are more fully developed than others; for instance, the explanation of the survey percentages relies on mechanical listing rather than fully extending the comparison between the two periods. To reach a higher band, the overview could be more seamlessly integrated, and the relationships between the pre- and post-refurbishment data points could be analyzed with greater depth and precision.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The essay has a coherent overall arrangement with a clear attempt at paragraphing, dividing the introduction, overview, table data, and survey results into distinct sections. Information and ideas are generally organized logically. However, cohesion is at times faulty and mechanical, with repetitive transitional phrases like 'regarding the table,' 'turning to results,' and 'after refurbishment.' Additionally, referencing is occasionally awkward, such as the confusing clause 'while being satisfied and very satisfied recorded the highest percentage.' To improve cohesiveness, a wider variety of cohesive devices should be used more flexibly, and paragraph transitions should guide the reader more naturally through the comparison of the visual data.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items related to data reporting and surveys, such as 'proportion,' 'accounted for,' and 'respectively.' However, there are noticeable lexical inaccuracies and awkward phrasing, such as 'visitors visiting' (redundancy), 'satisfied results was' (incorrect collocation and agreement), and 'vistitors giving no responsed' (spelling and word form error: 'responsed'). These errors do not seriously impede communication, but they reflect the limits of the current band level. To achieve a higher score, the vocabulary must demonstrate more precision in word choice, correct word forms, and better collocation control.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The writing demonstrates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, utilizing relative clauses and comparative structures adequately. There are, however, several grammatical errors throughout the text, including tense consistency issues ('decline' instead of 'declined'), punctuation errors like missing commas in complex structures, and preposition misuse (e.g., 'satisfaction of visitors' or 'surveys of visitors satisfaction'). Despite these errors, meaning is rarely obscured, and sentences remain generally understandable. To progress, the writer needs to increase the proportion of error-free complex sentences and exercise tighter control over verb tenses, plurals, and agreement.
