Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The response satisfies the baseline requirements by addressing all parts of the prompt, providing an overview, and reporting the main data points such as visitor numbers (74,000 rising to 92,000) and satisfaction shifts. It successfully bridges into the higher band by clearly selecting and reporting key features and making relevant comparisons. However, it stops short of a higher level because some details are under-developed or imprecise, such as referring to museum visitors as 'pupils' when reporting the difference of almost 20,000. Additionally, the overview contains minor phrasing awkwardness ('proportion dissatisfied visitors'), which prevents it from being fully polished.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The text demonstrates a coherent overall arrangement with a clear logical progression from the introductory paraphrase to the overview, visitor numbers, and finally satisfaction levels. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate different features of the visual data. Cohesion is generally present, but referencing and transitional devices are occasionally mechanical or slightly faulty, such as the abrupt transition in the final paragraph ('Whereas the number of non responsive visitors...'). While the progression is clear throughout, the mechanical nature of some cohesive links keeps the response firmly at this level without achieving the more flexible and natural flow of the next band.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, successfully attempting less common items like 'refurbishment', 'redevelopment', and 'proportion'. However, there are noticeable lexical errors, awkward word choices, and spelling mistakes throughout the text, such as 'visitirs', 'musuem', 'redevloped', and 'non responsive'. The phrase 'proportion dissatisfied visitors' misses a preposition, and calling adult museum patrons 'pupils' is an inappropriate collocation. These inaccuracies occasionally cause minor confusion, though communication is not severely impaired. To reach higher bands, the vocabulary must feature greater precision, correct word formation, and fewer spelling slips.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at subordinate clauses and comparative structures. There are several grammatical errors present, including missing articles ('the museum underwent major redevelopment', 'visited musuem', 'reduced to the half') and minor prepositional slips. Punctuation is also slightly neglected, with a missing period at the very end of the text. Despite these errors, meaning is rarely impeded, and the sentence structures remain comprehensible. To achieve a higher band, the writer would need to demonstrate greater control over complex structures with significantly fewer errors in articles and noun phrase agreements.
