Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The response successfully addresses all parts of the prompt by presenting an overview of the visitor numbers alongside the satisfaction survey results for both periods. Key features are accurately reported and compared, such as the increase in total visitor numbers from 74,000 to 92,000, and the shift from dissatisfaction prior to refurbishment to general satisfaction afterwards. The selection of data is generally accurate, noting the key figures for attendance and the major shifts in survey categories. However, there is a tendency to over-generalise or group percentages slightly loosely, such as stating that 'a half of the proportions of the visitors were not satisfied' when the charts show 40% dissatisfied and 10% very dissatisfied combined. Nonetheless, all core requirements of the task are met well, placing this criterion solidly at the current band.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response exhibits some organization through the use of distinct paragraphs for the table data and survey charts, along with an introductory overview. However, there is a lack of clear overall progression, and the linking between sentences feels somewhat mechanical and repetitive, relying heavily on phrases like 'Along with that' and 'The year before refurbishment of the museum'. Paragraphing is attempted, but the grouping of information lacks seamless transitions. Referencing is occasionally unclear, and cohesive devices are somewhat inadequate or over-used, which prevents the essay from achieving a more fluid logical flow throughout.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The vocabulary used is limited but minimally adequate for the task. The student attempts some less common terms and data-reporting language, such as 'refurbished', 'proportions', and 'remained constant', but these are accompanied by noticeable errors in word choice, collocation, and form, such as 'furbishment' instead of refurbishment, 'quatrers' instead of quarters, and missing capitalization for proper nouns like 'ashdown museum'. Spelling errors and awkward phrasing occur throughout the text, which occasionally causes some difficulty for the reader and restricts the lexical score to this level.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
The essay displays a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on simple statements and repetitive clause patterns. Attempts at complex or longer sentences are often faulty, such as the grammatically incomplete opening dependent clause ('While the charts illustrate...'). Frequent errors are present in punctuation, capitalization, and prepositions, including missing periods, lowercase starting letters for sentences, and awkward prepositional phrases like 'during the before and after'. These frequent grammatical inaccuracies and limitations in structural variety can cause some difficulty for the reader.
